Lean Government Revolution: Improving Revegetation Practices Reduces Drainage Issues by 90 Percent

Government agencies often receive criticism for red tape and poor service to citizens. Well, it just does not have to be that way. And, there is good news: in many jurisdictions, there is a Lean Government Revolution underway to cut red tape and enhance service, through the efforts of empowered teams of people working to improve government, every day.

At the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), our Lean Revolution – utilizing the principles and practices of continuous improvement to make our services more effective, efficient and elegant -- is making a difference.

Here’s one example: a CDOT improvement team recently modified the Highway Project Delivery process to include a new phase: the Post-Construction Establishment Phase (PCEP). This improvement reduces the incidence of erosion and drainage issues on construction projects significantly: from 60 percent to just 6 percent of projects—an amazing 90 percent improvement. It also reduces the need to reseed from 80 percent to just 40 percent of projects—a terrific 50 percent reduction.
