Leak Detection
In the ongoing pursuit of more advanced sustainable environmental practices and conservation, the advancement of optics-based technologies are playing a critical role. From mitigating environmental risks to enhancing operational efficiencies and fostering more responsible resource management, innovative companies are pushing the boundaries of leak detection for resources such as methane gas and oil.
Detecting Methane Emissions
Methane, a greenhouse gas, poses significant challenges in its detection. Traditional detection methods often fall short in accurately localizing methane leaks, resulting in environmental harm and economic losses.
A world leader in the high-resolution remote sensing of greenhouse gas emissions from space, GHGSAT provides emissions data and unique information to companies, governments, regulators, and investors worldwide, with the aim of optimizing their performance and meeting environmental standards.
GHGSat is developing a solution to detect methane plumes using artificial intelligence (AI), developed by INO, to optimize its data analysis capabilities and automate its detection operations.

Detecting Oil Leaks
Similarly, in the oil and gas industry, quickly detecting oil leaks in pipelines is critical to prevent environmental disasters that could harm biodiversity and surrounding environment, impact operational efficiency and damage company reputations.
While aboveground pipelines are more accessible for traditional monitoring methods, the challenge lies in detecting leaks in buried pipelines where visual inspection is not possible. Flyscan Systems Inc. decided to tackle this issue head on. In collaboration with INO, Flyscan developed an airborne sensor with the precision and sensitivity to detect oil leaks from buried pipelines, which otherwise would have gone unnoticed if using conventional methods.
