Learn all about League’s Major League Mentorship Program and what’s made it so successful!

Anne: What is Major League Mentorship?

Damien: Major League Mentorship (MLM) is an internal mentorship program that was launched in February 2021 with the goals of developing, growing, and enabling Leaguers to learn from each other. Mentorship can increase engagement and enhance connection and relationship building within an organization, and the program provides Leaguers with an opportunity to learn and grow from more senior Leaguers and vice versa. Mentorship not only shapes your career, but is also rewarding to be a mentor as it can be to be a mentee.??

Anne: What inspired you to launch a mentorship program at League??

Nolan: We were inspired by a number of reasons:

  • There was a huge ask for it - Leaguers from different parts of the organization were talking about mentorship and were hungry for it!?
  • We also have a very passionate executive sponsor, Muneeb Yusuf, who is our General Counsel. The support we’ve received from Muneeb has been incredible as he’s personally had many mentors that have contributed to his personal success.?
  • Folks started to talk more about mentorship and its importance to be inclusive for all Leaguers. That’s why our MLM program has a key and critical DEI algorithm incorporated and is critical to our program's success. We want to ensure all Leaguers are matched with someone that they are comfortable to learn and grow from.?

Anne: How many Leaguers are involved with the program??

Nolan: At the moment we have 130 matches! We actually introduce it to all Leaguers as part of their onboarding program and it’s highly encouraged to take advantage of the program.?

Anne: Can you tell us about your relationships with your mentors and mentees??

Nolan: Having someone to talk to who isn’t your direct manager, and someone who is outside of your team has been great for honest and candid conversations. It’s been really beneficial to talk to someone about career growth who has a neutral perspective.?

Damien: Curiosity is important in a mentorship relationship. My mentor asked me good questions, challenged me and enabled me to improve certain aspects of my work which pushed me in my role. I would highly encourage everyone to seek out a mentor or join a mentorship program like MLM so that you can develop your skills and accelerate your own career.?

Anne: How is DEI incorporated into the MLM program?

Damien: To empower all Leaguers with a mentorship opportunity, regardless of individuals’ backgrounds, we remove any potential bias from the program through a robust matching program that’s automated as much as possible. This enables the best possible matching it can have while removing bias from the process. We use tangible, objective criteria to match people with the right mentorship preferences. If we aren’t able to match a mentee with a mentor internally, we will find a mentor externally to ensure an incredible match for all of our Leaguers.

Anne: Any advice on developing a mentor / mentee relationship??

Nolan: Keep it casual. Don’t be too formal but come prepared with questions and ideas. It takes time to build a mentor / mentee relationship.?

Damien: Be curious. Seek to understand and ask a lot of questions. No matter if you're a mentor or a mentee, this is really important for success!?
