The Leaf That Came To Call

The Leaf That Came To Call

This?leaf came to call.?

The year was 2016.

I found it one Autumn morning on the doorstep of my then?home in Wimbledon. I remember being awestruck by its simple?beauty?when I saw it laying on the ground. It seemed oddly out of place on the cement step at the end of the black and white tiled path to my front door. Out of place, yet?perfectly prophetic.? ??

?? It took me a further four years to let go of that house and sell it.??

Letting go of it was a biggie because so much of my identity was wrapped up in those four walls, that street, that location. I was a very busy businesswoman. I was also very stuck. To create something new, I had to find the time and the inner resolve to let go and sell that house, and open into the wider expanse calling me.? ??

?? Many of us resist letting go.??

Unspoken fears can keep us holding on for dear life to something which is comfortable for us but no longer fits who we are now. This ‘something’ that we are holding on to might be a habit, a job, a relationship, a house, a home location, a way of living, an ideal, a concept, or a belief and?out-dated story we have about ourselves.? ??

For a tree, letting go of its leaves is a natural event that happens when it’s time to move to a new phase, signalled by a new season.

Without letting go, the cycle of growth and renewal is blocked, and the new phase cannot happen.

A tree shows us beautifully right timing in action.

The old phase isn’t wrong.

How could it be?

It was in perfect timing itself. It’s just no longer a fit for what wants to happen now.

??What about you? What wants to happen now for you???

As you too begin to prepare for shorter days and the winter season ahead (*) what is it time for you to let go of…in your work or in your life?

What small step can you take today to begin this process?

You can email me at [email protected] and tell me that step in a sentence to support your action taking.

(*) Southern hemisphere readers please adapt accordingly.

There’s no doubt that as you get older, letting go becomes harder, Amanda. Midlife, I made the momentous decision to leave London and return to my home county. 25 years on, that was one of the best decisions. My life changed immeasurably for the better swapping the city I loved for a tiny hamlet. My next change will be the biggest decision of all. How I shape ‘retirement’.
