K. Kelly Hancock, DNP, RN, NE-BC, FAAN
Executive Vice President and Chief Caregiver Officer and Rich Family Chief Caregiver Chair at Cleveland Clinic
Throughout the past few days and weeks, I have witnessed remarkable levels of nursing care unfold, incredible displays of professional unity, and an amazing sense of commitment and dedication from all of those who are fighting the coronavirus/COVID-19 pandemic from the frontline.
Day after day, nursing caregivers are rising to the challenge and showcasing the true essence of our great profession. During these unchartered and uncertain times, nurses’ hard work shines as a beacon of hope. Never in our lifetimes have we experienced a global health crisis of this magnitude, but I assure you, we are in this together.
Although the situation continues to change and evolve every day, our Cleveland Clinic Executive Nurse Leadership team has compiled a few recommendations to help other leaders and nursing organizations through the current phase of the COVID-19 pandemic. These include:
- Show strength in leadership.
- Communicate timely and accurate information to nursing caregivers.
- Ensure nursing caregiver safety.
- Clearly and precisely convey intended caregiver safety behaviors.
- Lean in and step up to the tough decisions.
