Leading vs Managing
I’m often asked how a manager can become a leader. The unspoken assumption behind this question is that the skill set of a manager is inherently less valuable than that of a leader or that if you’re a great manager, you’ll automatically be a leader. I disagree with this framing. Both leaders and managers have valuable skill sets, and both are required for a successful company.
As a manager, your strength lies in execution. Great managers are operational and tactical powerhouses. With a laser focus on milestones and deliverables, a great manager allocates resources and establishes processes to ensure success.?
Leaders are focused on the bigger picture. A great leader is inspiring and visionary, able to see around corners and anticipate what’s next. A great leader is resourceful, creative, and motivates their teams to do their best work.?
These are both important roles, and they rely on each other. The manager needs a leader who can set the broader vision and keep their eye on the horizon, so that the manager can focus on moving the ball forward. The leader needs someone who’s detail-oriented and can turn ideas into action. Each needs the other — and a successful team needs both.
Have you ever worked with great managers or leaders? What made them special?

1 年I think that managing is a necessary evil; without it, organizations wouldn't survive. That said, I see it more as an extension of leadership rather than something opposed to it. Padmasree Warrior

2 年Managers are often seen as glorified secretaries by those who underestimate them. However, managers play a crucial role in an organization. They do all of the ground work so that leaders can focus on what really matters - visionary work. A good manager is someone who can build a team with a variety of skills and strengths, delegate work effectively and provide feedback whereas a good leader is someone who knows how to motivate their employees to achieve the desired goals. They know how to get things done by any means necessary and they are not afraid to take risks.
