Before the reigns of Cleopatra VII of Egypt (51-30 BCE) and her relationships with Julius Caesar and Mark Antony, led to the eventual integration of Egypt into the Roman Empire.
Before the Rise of the Roman Republic and its transformation into an Empire (27 BCE-14 CE) under Augustus.
Before the Han Dynasty in China (202 BCE–220 CE), which was marked by a centralized government, advances in science and technology, and the Silk Road trade network.
Before the Conquest of Greece by Philip II of Macedon (338 BCE) and his son Alexander the Great's empire building, led to the spread of Greek culture and influence.
Before all this, in the 5th century, BCE lived one of the greatest leaders of all time, Nehemiah.
Leadership has been a buzzword for years. It seems like everyone in every profession and walk of life. And Nehemiah has been written about from far greater minds than mine. A reasonable question can be asked of what else can be said about a subject.
A major point that I have seen very little of is an examination of the whole of leadership. And therefore, how the whole of leadership is executed.
John Kotter of the Harvard Business School explains Leadership this way -
Leaders establish the vision for the future and set the strategy for getting there; they cause change. They motivate and inspire others to go in the right direction and they, along with everyone else, sacrifice to get there.
In other words,
Leadership =?Visionary plus Administration
The Leader both declares the vision revealed and administratively sets the strategy to manage the necessary changes. This is a slightly different argument than I have and I suspect many of you have heard.
Sure, leaders are the visionaries, the CEO types. But rarer do we truly perceive leaders as the administrators, the Operations types.
In what is now amounting to many years of working and consulting, what has proven true again and again is that Visionaries can only take their companies so far. They get stuck, usually thinking that the problem is just a tweak away. Not realizing that the lack of a proper operations foundation is severely holding the enterprise back. For many organizations, it’s like trying to build a 100-foot building, with a 2-foot roots foundation. Everyone except the builder knows that a mighty crash is coming.
Instead, both visionary and administrative skills must be in close cooperation. As one builds up and is seen and congratulated for their accomplishment, the other builds down, often out of sight, setting the right foundation for the skyscraper to come.
Rarely are these attributes contained in the same person. This is what makes Nehemiah so fascinating and so effective. Nehemiah had the rare skills to possess both the Visionary and Administrative skills needed to implement the vision.
Strategic Leadership Scale
Strategic Leadership Scale:
________________________________________________________________
(Administrator) Manager????????????????????????????????????????????????(Visionary) Leaders
Some Leaders are naturally Visionary…
VISIONARY = If you are far to the right of the scale, you easily inspire people towards your vision, but you lack the Administrative skills to make that vision a reality.
Others are more naturally Administrators...
ADMINISTRATOR = If you are far to the left of the scale, can put together and implement a strategic plan once you have been given a vision. However, you have trouble motivating team members toward that vision.
?
Reflection:
Where are you on the diagram?
What are some areas of growth that will make you more balanced as a Strategic Leader?
Make no little plans. They have no magic to stir men's blood and probably themselves will not be realized. Make big plans. Aim high in hope and work. Remembering that a noble, logical diagram once recorded will not die. – Daniel H. Burnham
Nehemiah demonstrated his visionary leadership through his passion and motivation of others for rebuilding and his administrative skills through his careful planning and organization. And both visionary and administrivia leadership through his problem-solving. He was balanced in his visionary and administrative skills and was also a team player, servant leader, effective communicator, and adaptable.

Leadership is a complex and multi-faceted concept. Nonetheless, the most effective leaders appear to be those who possess both visionary and administrative skills. Whether your strength lies in administration or vision, there are at least two things that we all can do. The first is to continue to improve in both areas. The second is to get it covered. Get some help from those who understand how to help.
The example and insight of Nehemiah demonstrate the importance of balancing both skills for business success. A Leader is both someone who possesses visionary and/or administrative skills, or they get it covered and to effectively lead their business or organization to its desired future. They are flexible, adaptable, team players, servant leaders, and effective communicators.
The lessons learned from Nehemiah's experiences offer valuable insights for modern-day leaders in business. By incorporating these lessons into our leadership style, we modern-day leaders can improve our chances of success and overcome the challenges and obstacles we face.
All the best,
Anthony
