Johnathan, an insightful article. Purpose-driven leadership is an area that continues to inspire me. The decision of the US Business Roundtable in August 2019 to overturn the 22-year-old policy statement that defined a corporation’s principal purpose as maximizing shareholder return is instructive to leaders. They replaced it with a new purpose Statement declaring that companies should serve not only their shareholders, but also deliver value to their customers, invest in employees, deal fairly with suppliers and support the communities in which they operate. What if leaders, in the busyness of their work, adopted this new value proposition? Or is it that this new statement is well-intended but profit is too strong a motivation to cause political will to drive change? I’ve seen how a CST strategy intertwined with employee volunteerism and focused on grassroots, less-supported organizations doing great work can transform communities when leaders are out front with purpose.
