Spot the difference!

Today’s workforce has different values to those of their management.

As the baby boomer generation starts to move off into retirement & the Generation X Execs take over, neither of these older generations generally understand the budding Millennial workforce we are employing.

While us older types place high value in moving out, getting married & settling down, the new workforce does not see the value in tying themselves down with mortgage bonds or vehicle leases.

They wish to explore & not be burdened with all these responsibilities.

Hence, why move out of the comfortable family home & incur unnecessary costs?

So, who am I, the Millennial?

Yes, I am in debt for a useless degree.

Yes, I am lost without my mobile.

Yes, I am addicted to lattes.

Yes, make me unhappy at work, & I will simply move on; I am not tied to a company

Yes, but if I feel engaged & valued, I will shoot the lights out…………..

Hey, it is our new age generation who mastered social media, have the energy of a thousand suns, & who will knock back 5-buck macchiatos, until the job is done perfectly.

So, Boss, from us, your future STAR PERFORMERS, what do we seek from you & company?

1.      stop tolerating second rate work

It’s downright debilitating to a high achiever.

I’m working my heart out & every time I look up a do-nothing is contemplating how long is too long to take for lunch. Why do you accept this?

If this is the expectation level, I am out of here.

2.      Stop waxing on about numbers

Of course, business is about the return on investment.

But surely not at the expense of the people who strive every day to bring you those numbers.

If all you care about is numbers, I am out – I am a person, with intellect & the ability to bring you the bottom line you so desire, but not at the expense of my very humanity.


3.      Culture is more important than collateral

I may be a cash-strapped millennial who really appreciates free lunch. 

I need to be surrounded by people who are on fire for what we’re doing. 

I need a Boss who is motivated to push boundaries & think differently. 

Working in a cool office environment is really awesome.

So is free lunch..........................

But a purposeful culture is more important.

4.      It’s ok to get personal

I am not a number, but a real flesh & blood individual.

Treat me like a number, & I will become one - after a few months, I’ll probably realize I want more out of life than this.

6 months in, I’ll quit & leave.

Or worse, I’ll quit & stay.

I was raised to believe I could change the world. 

I’m desperate for you to show me that the work I do here, matters, even just a little bit. 

I’ll make copies, I’ll fetch coffee, I’ll even do the donkey work. 

But I’m not not just a nameless number doing it to help you get a new Mercedes.


5.      In summary

I’ll give you everything I’ve got, but I need to know my input & energy makes a difference & is regarded as something more than just a means to help you achieve your bottom line.
