Leading a remote team doesn't have to be 'lonely'

19 years ago when it wasn't the done thing to work at home, I often found myself feeling rather lonely trying to lead my team.

It took me a few years in business to find the right people in the right places to support me and help me feel less lonely and isolated trying to crack this remote working thing which many people scoffed at.

I definitely struggled for longer than I needed too, and this in turn was part of the reason I've created Remote Team Queen.

But today I wanted to give you five of the things I personally implemented in my business over the years to make sure I didn't fall into the loneliness trap, and to ensure not only was I supporting my team but I was also supporting myself.

  1. Build senior team members into your team who share your purpose and vision who you can catch up with regularly to bounce ideas off and gain support and feedback.
  2. Get a PA that helps you with the day-to-day tasks and hence, who you have regular, sometimes daily contact with.
  3. Get a business mentor for guidance, support, goal setting, and accountability. Monthly catch-ups with my business mentor keep me on track and moving in a positive direction. Business was really hard, stressful, a lot of guesswork, and lonely before I engaged a mentor about 12 years into my business journey.
  4. Join a network of business leaders where it’s about connection, not competition. I thought I was the only one struggling until I joined a network of women who struggle with the same stuff! Phew! What a load lifted. I now have a great balance of people around me all playing different roles and together we come up with solutions and strategies to overcome. No more fighting battles alone!
  5. If you’re a team leader, make sure you’re having regular catch-ups with your direct manager and other team leaders- keep those communication lines open and active so you don’t feel like you’re working in isolation.

To quote a famous poet John Donne, ‘no man is an island’.

As humans, connection is essential for our well-being and survival.

But remember, this connection CAN happen remotely!?

To your thriving remote team,

Lisa George
