Leading with purpose: What it takes and why it’s so important

Purpose has always been important. In fact, over the past 20 years, companies with clear social purpose have outperformed the S&P. Yet, in today’s increasingly socially conscious world, I believe it’s even more paramount. So, what does it take to lead with purpose? From my observations, the best CEOs ask themselves why their company exists and then make purpose an intrinsic part of the business model. They know that by testing strategy against purpose they’ll not only open up new areas of growth, they’ll also likely enhance employee loyalty and well-being.

?According to McKinsey, 70% of employees now demand purposeful work, and customers are also making choices based on purpose and sustainability. In another McKinsey article, they discuss the disengagement some employees feel and how they’re gravitating toward organizations that have a clear and positive impact on the world. In other words, what companies say about their motives and how they support that sentiment with action matters a lot.
