Still seething from the recent racist riots? You’re not alone. The rage and sorrow that many of us feel aren’t just fleeting emotions – they’re a stark reminder of the cowardice of ignorance still entrenched in our society.
But amid the chaos, there’s a powerful force at work: the audacious solidarity that binds our diverse communities together. Look around – our shared histories and vibrant cultures have woven a rich tapestry that makes the UK the beautifully diverse nation it is today.
And, it’s taken the audacity of leadership to achieve this.
Why? Because audacious leaders are seeing that it provides an opportunity for us to talk. And what better opportunity is there to talk than the up and coming Black History Month (BHM) in October.
Has your organisation been thinking about BHM? At Rockstone, we’ve had the privilege of leading these initiatives, and let me tell you, it’s been brilliant!!
This year, we’re urging organisations to step up with audacious leadership to turn BHM from just an event on the calendar to a powerful platform for dialogue.
Why a dialogue? Because expressing our thoughts and feelings can help reduce stress and anxiety.
?? Talking can provide a new perspective on what we think and help us find solutions.
???? Conversations strengthen relationships and foster a sense of belonging between us.
???? Talking can help us understand ourselves better and gain new insights into the other's story.
???? Sharing our emotions can help us process them and regulate our feelings.
But here’s the thing, this isn’t about ticking boxes or following the same tired script of events and discussions.

No, this is about bold leadership – the kind that turns words into action, that steps up to acknowledge and celebrate the invaluable contributions of Black individuals to our society.
So, what does audacious leadership look like in this context? Here are some strategic moves for those ready to rise to the occasion:
???? Use BHM to Bring People Together. BHM is our chance to pull people from all backgrounds in your organisation together, building a shared understanding of our history and its impact on the present. Host vibrant, inclusive events that get everyone involved, sparking conversations and connections that fortify the unity and strength of your community.
???? Use BHM as a Catalyst for Real Change. Black History Month isn’t just a time for reflection – it’s a chance to spark deep, lasting conversations about inclusivity. Embed these discussions into the fabric of your organisation through workshops, briefings, and systems that reflect a true commitment to belonging for your minority customers and stakeholders.
???? Allocate Budgets with Intent. Your budget allocation speaks volumes about your organisation’s priorities. Is your engagement with BHM just a performative gesture, or does it reflect a genuine investment in change? Make sure the resources you assign aren’t just symbolic but are substantial enough to drive real impact that extends well beyond October.
???? Develop a Comprehensive Communication Strategy. Black History Month demands a robust communication strategy that starts early. While BHM should be a year-round focus, October is the time to amplify your message. Ensure that your communications are clear, consistent, and penetrate every level of your organisation. Your team, partners, and stakeholders should understand the ethos of BHM long before the month kicks off.
???? Lead from the Top. Effective leadership must be visible and unwavering. A strong message from your CEO, reinforced by department heads, can set a powerful tone for your entire organisation. It’s essential to unite your team, from the leadership down to the frontline. Yes, there will be differing opinions, but strong leadership ensures that BHM reflects your organisational values.
???? Recognise the Emotional Impact. Black History Month is a time of celebration, but for many, it’s also a period of reflection that can stir up pain. Acknowledge this and provide the necessary support. Balance your initiatives with opportunities for open dialogue, resilience-building, and mental health support. True leaders know when to drive forward and when to create space for listening and healing, ensuring a supportive environment for all.
This October, let’s not just observe Black History Month –?let’s celebrate it with audacity. Let’s challenge the status quo, amplify voices that need to be heard, and make decisions that resonate far beyond the confines of a single month.
What steps will you take? Let’s come together, and lead with purpose, towards a future that honours our collective history and fosters hope and harmony for all.
