Leading with Positivity in Uncertain Times: A CEO’s Perspective on Thriving Amid Change

By Dr. LaShonda Bracey

As a small business CEO, I’ve learned that one constant in our world is change. Whether it’s navigating economic shifts, adapting to new executive orders, or responding to global events, the uncertainties of our time can feel overwhelming. However, I’ve also learned that within these challenges lie opportunities to lead with resilience, creativity, and optimism.

In recent months, small business owners across the country have faced unique challenges as executive orders have reshaped industries, redefined compliance requirements, and shifted workforce dynamics. It’s easy to feel as though the ground beneath us is moving, but this is also a time for us to rise.

Embracing Change as an Opportunity

Executive orders and policy shifts, while complex, are often a reflection of the evolving needs of our country. They can disrupt the way we do business, but they also open doors to innovation. For example, policies aimed at expanding sustainability or promoting diversity may require changes in our operations, but they also present opportunities to serve new markets, access grants or contracts, and showcase our values.

As CEOs, we must shift our mindset from resistance to adaptation. Instead of asking, “Why is this happening to us?” let’s ask, “How can this work for us?” This small but powerful pivot enables us to see beyond obstacles and create strategies that align with the future.

Leading with Clarity and Compassion

Uncertainty can create anxiety among employees, partners, and clients. In times like these, leadership is about more than driving profits—it’s about building trust. Transparency is key. Let your team and stakeholders know where you stand and what you’re doing to navigate changes.

Equally important is compassion. Recognize the human side of uncertainty. Many of our employees and partners may feel the same unease we do. By showing empathy, we build stronger, more loyal teams that are willing to weather the storm with us.

Innovation and Collaboration: The Keys to Thriving

Small businesses are the heartbeat of the American economy. Our size gives us the agility to pivot quickly, test new ideas, and collaborate with others. Whether it’s teaming up with another business to share resources or embracing new technologies to streamline operations, the possibilities for innovation are endless.

For example, I’ve found that changes in government contracting rules—while initially daunting—have given my team new opportunities to rethink how we approach bids, refine our processes, and grow our partnerships. By staying informed, seeking expert guidance, and networking with peers, we’ve turned potential challenges into stepping stones.

Staying Positive in the Midst of Uncertainty

In uncertain times, positivity is not just a personal trait—it’s a leadership strategy. It doesn’t mean ignoring challenges or pretending everything is perfect. It means choosing to focus on solutions, celebrating small wins, and inspiring others to do the same.

Here are a few ways I stay positive:

  1. Practice Gratitude: Reflect on the progress you’ve made, the people who support you, and the opportunities ahead.
  2. Focus on the Vision: Uncertainty is temporary, but your long-term goals remain. Keep your eyes on the prize.
  3. Invest in Yourself: Whether it’s professional development, wellness, or simply taking a break, self-care is non-negotiable for CEOs.

Leading the Way Forward

As small business owners, we are not powerless in the face of uncertainty. We are adaptable, innovative, and resourceful. By staying informed, fostering collaboration, and leading with positivity, we can navigate the complexities of today’s world and emerge stronger than ever.

Let’s remind ourselves that uncertainty is not the enemy—it’s an invitation to grow, evolve, and lead. Together, we can turn challenges into opportunities and build a brighter future for our businesses, our communities, and our country.
