When I was growing up I used to be fascinated by world leaders. I marveled at how leaders controlled others opinions & actions.
I decided I wanted to become a leader who would grow, develop & influence people.
I immersed myself in leadership material. I thought leadership could help me become successful & powerful.
But in my pursuit of leadership, I failed to learn two critical lessons:
1. Leadership is not about us. It is about serving others.
2. The hardest person we will ever lead is ourselves, not someone else.
I learnt that the ability to put others interest over my own would require conscious and deliberate effort because all of us are born with some level of innate selfishness.
I also realized that none of my problems were due to my childhood conditioning, my employers, companies policies, the government or anything else that I perceived to be the source of my issues.
All my problems came from inside me, not outside me.
I took responsibility, admitted to my limiting paradigms, stopped blaming someone else or something else & decided to add value to others.
I understood that leadership is about power over myself, not others. I learnt that leadership meant serving others first and myself second.
Today, some people see me as a leader.
It is because I see leadership as a function, not a position.
The wonderful thing about leadership is that when we stop thinking about being a leader and dedicate ourself to adding value to people, others want us to be the leader.

7 å¹´The ability to lead oneself! Introspection Self-awareness Articulation You cannot add value to others if you have not added value to yourself first, you cannot give if you have nothing to give. Give when you have much to give, add value when you have value to add, lead when you can lead and also when you have been led. Lead from a place of "i am no more and you are no less" but we can all be a higher more evolved being by increasing our sense of Self-awareness. Let's not only motivate people to be their best self and live their best life by telling them our stories and giving inspiring motivational talks and giving them the tools they need to success but giving and sharing the knowledge of how to use these tools and apply it for successful outcomes. Tools with out knowledge is just a tool. Real knowledge is in the " how to apply and use the tools given" Don't assume people know how, its all relative. Thank you Ron for your insightful posts, we are indeed more then what we are tought to be!
