Leading with Love: Transform Organizations Through Individuals

Leading with Love: Transform Organizations Through Individuals

Hello Transformative Leaders,

Today, we explore the power of leading with love—a transformative approach that focuses on the individual for the betterment of the organization. By extending oneself for others, leaders can create profound personal and organizational change.

Core Skills

Leading with love encompasses several key elements:

  1. Unconditional Positive Regard (UPR): Always take the UPR road, showing unwavering support and respect for each team member.
  2. Selfless Extension: Love is about extending oneself for the betterment of others, fostering an environment where individuals feel valued and supported.
  3. Individual Focus: Prioritize the well-being and growth of individuals, understanding that what benefits the individual ultimately benefits the organization. Leaders who adopt this mindset tend to be more generative and less transactional.

My Leadership Experience

During my time as the Head of Manager and Leadership Development for Google Recruiting, I was tasked with developing a leadership strategy and programs to support it. One of the cornerstone programs I designed was "Courageous Coaches," aimed at equipping all managers with strong coaching skills to better support their teams amidst widespread change and fear-driven reactions.

This significant investment in our managers was an act of love, reflecting our trust in their ability to use these newfound skills to support their people effectively. The impact was profound: managers were better equipped to navigate the pandemic, leading to improved organizational resilience. Additionally, many leaders were inspired to pursue careers as full-time leadership coaches, creating new career paths and personal growth opportunities. This transformation, driven by love, led to both personal and organizational growth, highlighting the far-reaching impact of leading with love.

Lessons Learned

  1. Ego Management: Leading with love requires quieting your ego and embracing vulnerability.
  2. Courage and Vulnerability: Acts of love in leadership demand courage and the willingness to make yourself vulnerable.
  3. Transformative Power: Loving leadership can transform both individuals and organizations, but it requires letting go of control over the outcomes.

Suggestions

  1. Identify Selfless Acts: Reflect on the actions you take out of the kindness of your heart. These are your acts of loving leadership.
  2. Practice Purposefully: Find areas in your leadership where your ego is minimal and practice these acts intentionally.
  3. Support Development: Prioritize supporting the development of others. Although it can be challenging when busy, investing in your team’s growth pays dividends for years to come.
