Leading Innovation at City Property – Talia Wapnick

Talia Wapnick, Executive of Innovation at City Property began her career with a solid foundation in finance. After completing her studies at Wits University, she joined Grant Thornton for her articles. Seeking broader horizons, she undertook an overseas internship.

She has a passion for solving issues and quickly transitioned into her role as the Executive Head of Innovation.? Talia recently completed her MBA in innovation and entrepreneurship at Reichman University in Israel.

While Talia acknowledges the importance of mentorship, she draws her greatest inspiration from her parents. Her father's unwavering work ethic and commitment to integrity, coupled with her mother's encouragement to be self-sufficient and respectful, have been foundational to her success. These values have guided her through her career, helping her navigate challenges and seize opportunities.

Talia's innovative spirit is perhaps best exemplified by two standout projects: ?Shared and furnished accommodation at The Fields and The Wash Bar, a self-service laundromat.

The Fields: From conception to final delivery

The Fields project arose from a need to address rising vacancies. Talia took the initiative to investigate the root causes, conceptualise a solution, and manage the project from start to finish. Despite being outside her comfort zone, she trusted her instincts, which ultimately paid off as the project expanded multiple times.

Changing perceptions – one wash at a time

The Wash Bar is a new concept she introduced together with Philippa Spruyt, design extraordinaire and it’s still growing.? Utilising small and uninviting spaces and turning them into a new, clean, and cool destination proved to be a winning solution as they still receive compliments and requests for franchises.

Yethu City: A Vision for the Future

One of Talia's most ambitious projects to date is Yethu City, a concept that emerged from the success of shared units at The Fields and Nedbank Plaza. Yethu City aims to create purpose-built, entry-level accommodation that offers dignified, safe, and attractive living spaces. By formalising co-living, Talia and the team envision a thriving community where tenants can live, work, and play in harmony. The project is designed to offer convenience and simplicity, with all-inclusive rentals and a focus on shared amenities that enhance the collective living experience. If successful, Yethu City has the potential to become a recognisable brand and be rolled out on a larger scale.

Advice for Aspiring Women in Business

Talia's advice to young women aspiring to enter the business world is simple yet powerful: "Just do it." She emphasises the importance of self-belief and not allowing others to dictate your path. Talia's journey is a testament to the impact that intelligent, capable, and confident women can have in the business world. By focusing on personal growth and trusting in their abilities, women can become unstoppable forces in their respective fields.
