Leading Health, Safety and Well-being Indicators in Construction

Leading Health, Safety and Well-being Indicators in Construction

CHASNZ’s mission is to reduce harm from occupational accidents, ill health and poor well-being in the construction industry.

For decades, how we measure health and safety has been rearward focused and defined by the presence or absence of injuries, illness and accidents. This has meant we have fixated on measures such as recordable injury rates.

We now know that these types of measures have little to no use in preventing serious injuries and deaths and in many instances hamper the progress that is needed to provide our workers with healthier and safer working environments.

CHASNZ would like to start a discussion with the construction sector over the coming months and years to establish where our focus should be and what we can measure in order to provide a healthier and safer environment.

We have created a discussion document for industry that summarises contemporary research and suggests potential new measures. This is just the start!

This document explores new possibilities for measuring health and safety in construction and is available to download from our website here.

Our intention is to engage widely with all types and sizes of construction businesses over the coming two years.?

The objective is to gain and share experience from the field in order to understand what leading indicators assist to provide a better working environment, enhance wellbeing, prevent injuries, reduce poor health outcomes, and avoid accidents.

?We invite construction clients, contractors, professionals, associations, sole traders and all those with an interest in this field to use this document as a basis for discussions both within their own organisations as well as within wider industry .

In order to understand the current measures that Construction is using we have a short survey here that we invite you to undertake.

?Safety Climate and Client Leadership Tools

Supporting the Leading Health and Safety Indicators Discussion Document are two important measurement systems – client engagement and safety climate. In support of the leading indicators document CHASNZ will provide free safety climate and client leadership tools for businesses to use. These will be available in the coming weeks.

A great initiative Construction Health and Safety NZ (CHASNZ), I'm looking forward to getting more involved in these conversations.
