Leading from the Heart

Leadership is an art that emanates from the heart, not just the mind. Leadership is not a checklist; it's about "being" rather than just "doing."
?Leadership is about understanding the emotional core of human interaction. Research by emotional intelligence pioneer Daniel Goleman underscores the pivotal role of emotions in effective leadership. Leaders who navigate the emotional landscape with finesse, both recognizing and managing their own emotions and those of their teams, exhibit a level of leadership prowess that transcends the rational. Recognizing that leadership is not solely a cognitive endeavour but one deeply intertwined with human emotions, great leaders operate more from the realm of "feeling" than just "thinking."
The resonant leadership concept, championed by Richard Boyatzis and Annie McKee, emphasizes the emotional impact leaders have on their teams. Resonant leaders, as opposed to their dissonant counterparts, create environments steeped in compassion, authenticity, empathy and trust. In a world where the human touch is paramount, leaders who lead from the heart cultivate a positive emotional environment that fuels collaboration and collective success.
Over-reliance on the mind space and rationality may overshadow the crucial element of feeling. The crux lies in understanding that true engagement and a sense of belonging necessitate more than espoused benefits; they require leaders to lead by example. It's not just about preaching values but living and practising them authentically. While many leaders may resort to offering perks, benefits, and organized activities as a means to connect and engage people, these often fall short of creating lasting memories or evoking genuine emotions. Such initiatives can be perceived as mere events orchestrated by leaders to check off engagement boxes, driven by a calculated, mind-driven approach rather than an authentic display of heartfelt behaviour. It involves demonstrating a commitment that stems directly from the heart. People possess an innate ability to unconsciously discern authenticity, recognizing actions that emanate from the heart and, conversely, discounting those that are purely rational or logical.
?In emphasizing this, Simon Sinek's work on compassionate leadership comes to the forefront. Leaders who genuinely care about the well-being of their teams create a culture that resonates with the human need for emotional connection. A leadership approach dominated by rationality risks alienating the very essence of what makes us human – our need for emotional touch.
?Leadership is not a series of prescribed activities or benefits but a continuous practice of authenticity. Authenticity fosters an emotional touch that transcends superficial engagements. When leaders genuinely embody the values and principles they advocate, it creates a ripple effect throughout the organization. Employees are not swayed by extravagant events but by consistent, heartfelt actions that align with the professed ethos of the organization.

?Empathy is another emotional trait that demonstrates leading from the heart. As Daniel Siegel explores, leaders who connect empathetically with their teams understand and validate the feelings and perspectives of others, building relationships that go beyond the transactional. As human beings, we crave this emotional resonance and leaders who neglect this aspect risk leaving a void in the fabric of their teams.
?Trust, a cornerstone of leadership, thrives in the soil of emotional connection. Paul J. Zak's research into the science of trust underscores the role of oxytocin – the "trust hormone." Leaders who embrace trust fulfil the deep-seated human need for belonging, ownership, and pride within their teams.
?Creating an environment where people can flourish and grow requires more than just logical thinking. Leaders who lead with their hearts encourage an open expression of ideas and foster an atmosphere where individuals feel emotionally secure – a critical component for organizational growth.
