In the fast-paced world of today, innovation is not just a buzzword but a necessity for survival and growth; as we take on the Exponential Age. We explore a transformative approach to leadership that places future thinking at its core – I attempt to build on the seminal work of one our generation's best management thinkers: Harvard Professor Clayton Christensen. He is an American academic and business consultant who developed the theory of "disruptive innovation", which has been called the most influential business idea of the early 21st century.[1][2] Christensen introduced "disruption" in his 1997 book The Innovator's Dilemma, and it led The Economist to term him "the most influential management thinker of his time. He's also one of the founders of the Jobs to Be Done development methodology; Jobs Theory IMO is akin to Jeet-Kune-Do (Bruce Lee's adaptation of Wing Chun martial arts that optimises impact x distance) for practical innovation - or more popularly referred to as Outcome Driven Innovation (ODI). Needless to say his work has inspired me and this isn't a homage, but I'd like to summarise/highlight why it's so crucial for fostering disruptive yet sustainable innovation. His book Innovator's Dilemma = my all time #1 favourite; analogous to Ben Graham's (Warren Buffett's mentor) investing primer written in early 20th century.
?Embracing Future-Centric Leadership??
Leading from the Future introduces the concept of future-centric leadership, which challenges traditional leadership models focused on the present. The idea is stark: the amount % of time we spend on/in the future is hardly enough! We spend the bulk of our waking hours solving today's (and yesterday's) problems; we are ill equipped to take on challenges from the near, mid and long-term futures.
Here's why this approach is a game-changer for innovation:??
What's the So What?
Leading from the Future (as a perspective) offers several key takeaways that make it indispensable for fostering disruptive yet sustainable innovation:

Conclusion
Devoting more time to thinking about the future amidst the pressures of solving today's operational problems might seem counterintuitive, but it is crucial for several compelling reasons:??
?Present-forward thinking is the majority; as taught by schools, as popularised by the likes of Jack Welch since the late 80s - but where has that gotten us? We need to spend more time in the future, on the future.
In summary, while solving today's operational problems is essential, dedicating time to think about the future is equally vital. It's not an either-or scenario; it's about finding the right balance. Future thinking empowers us to navigate uncertainty, drive innovation, and build a sustainable path to long-term success amidst the demands of the present.
