Leading by Example: Building Trust, Empowering Teams, and Embracing Innovation

Leadership is not just about managing people; it’s about setting the tone, fostering an environment of positivity, and driving progress. Throughout my career, I’ve learned that true leadership involves continuous learning, embracing change, and always looking for ways to support and uplift those around you. As I reflect on my journey, both as a leader and within the ever-evolving service industry, I realize that adaptability, integrity, and strong relationships are the cornerstones of success.

The Foundation of Leadership: Leading by Example

As a leader, I do my best to lead by example. I believe in showing optimism, sharing positive energy, and supporting my team, especially when we are facing challenges. Leading by example isn’t just a catchphrase—it’s a way of life. In an industry that is both demanding and ever-changing, maintaining a positive attitude can make all the difference. As we tackle daily obstacles, I’ve come to understand that the energy I bring to work has a ripple effect on my team.

Our industry, like many others, is not easy. The pressures of staying competitive, adhering to tight deadlines, and managing complex operations can be overwhelming. Yet, it’s during these challenging times that true leadership shines through. Growing up in a family of entrepreneurs, I was taught early on that success isn’t guaranteed, but it is possible with the right mindset. You must be committed to your work, put in the necessary time, and stay focused, even during the most difficult moments. It's this dedication that ensures the survival and success of a business, whether times are good or bad.

At SEACORP, we work in the service industry, and we understand the importance of our company’s reputation. It's not just the products or services we offer that keep our customers coming back; it's the integrity we uphold. Building strong relationships and maintaining trust with clients has been instrumental in fostering high customer retention. Reputation is everything in this line of work, and we constantly strive to meet and exceed expectations, knowing that long-term success depends on the relationships we nurture today.

The Journey from a New Leader to a Seasoned Manager

When I first began my leadership journey after graduating college, I had no idea how much there was to learn. I was eager, passionate, and ready to jump in, but the reality of leadership hit me hard. As a young leader, I lacked experience and didn’t always know the best way to approach every situation. However, as time passed, I realized the importance of surrounding myself with the right people who share similar values and work toward common goals.

One of the most important lessons I’ve learned as a leader is that building a team isn’t just about hiring the best people for the job, it’s about hiring people whose values are aligned with your own. This alignment creates a sense of unity, a common vision, and a shared commitment to the work at hand. I’ve found that when people feel aligned with the company’s mission and values, they bring their best selves to work every day, which fosters an environment of collaboration, productivity, and growth.

Yet, leadership is not without its challenges. One of the most difficult aspects of leadership is effective communication. Ensuring that everyone on the team is moving toward the same goal can be a complex task, particularly in an environment where there are multiple moving parts and competing priorities. Miscommunication can lead to confusion, frustration, and inefficiency. I’ve learned that transparency, regular check-ins, and clear expectations are key to avoiding misunderstandings and keeping the team aligned.

However, I also know that no one is perfect. There are times when I don’t get it right, and it’s during these moments that I remind myself that being a good leader means being willing to acknowledge your mistakes, listen to feedback, and take accountability. No one is immune to errors, but it’s how you handle them that sets the tone for your leadership and influences the morale of the team.

Embracing Innovation: Automation in a Traditional Industry

At SEACORP, we’re continually exploring ways to innovate and improve our operations. The service industry can be resistant to change, and our field is no exception. Automation is a key focus of our strategy, as it allows us to streamline workflows, eliminate manual processes, and reduce costs. The challenge, however, lies in the slow pace of technological adoption in our industry. The ocean shipping sector is notorious for its lack of standardization, making it difficult to implement new technologies and processes.

Despite these challenges, we remain committed to working with our Transportation Management System provider to improve efficiency and stay up to date with the latest technological advancements. While the road to full automation may be slow, we’re determined to push forward, knowing that any step toward greater efficiency is a step in the right direction.

Innovation is crucial, not just for staying competitive, but for continuously improving the service we offer our clients. Automation enables us to focus on what matters most: providing top-tier customer service and delivering reliable results. It’s an ongoing effort, but the potential benefits—lower costs, faster turnaround times, and greater accuracy—are well worth the investment.

Empowering Others and Building Strong Relationships

One of the greatest lessons I’ve learned in leadership came from SEACORP’s owner and president, Myra Heavner. From day one, she empowered me to make decisions and encouraged me to take ownership of my role. Myra’s leadership style emphasizes the importance of listening, sharing time, empowering others, and showing empathy. These qualities create a positive and supportive work culture that fosters collaboration and trust.

I’ve come to believe that leadership is not about exercising power over others but about empowering those around you. A good leader listens to their team, values their input, and works to create an environment where everyone feels respected and valued. In doing so, trust is built, and strong relationships are formed. These relationships are the bedrock of any successful business and are what ensure sustainability in the long term.

Trust is at the heart of everything we do at SEACORP. It’s the foundation upon which we build our customer relationships, our partnerships with vendors, and our internal team dynamics. When you treat others the way you want to be treated, when you lead with empathy and understanding, trust naturally follows.

Conclusion

Leadership is a continuous journey of learning, growing, and adapting to new challenges. It’s about surrounding yourself with the right people, communicating effectively, empowering others, and embracing innovation. Most importantly, it’s about building and maintaining trust. Whether you're working to improve your company’s processes, developing relationships with clients, or leading a team through difficult times, strong leadership requires integrity, empathy, and the willingness to evolve.

As we look to the future, I am excited to continue building upon these lessons and watching SEACORP grow in new and innovative ways.
