Leading by creating True Connections

Siya Kolisi is the first black captain in the history of South African rugby, leading his country to win the world championship in 2019 and 2023, a feat. What for some was an "anecdote" because of his origins and roots has over time demonstrated consistent and empathetic leadership. Someone who makes everyone around him better.

Listening to the podcast "Mindset Win " I draw out the main points of his leadership.

Main Points of his Leadership

1. Leading with Empathy and Vulnerability

  • Kolisi is open about his flaws and what he's going through, creating an environment where others feel comfortable sharing their struggles too.
  • He prioritizes people skills, sitting with teammates, and bringing people together through empathy and vulnerability.
  • Kolisi doesn't mind being the "laughing stock" if it helps lift others' spirits and create a positive team environment.

2. Personal Growth and Self-Awareness

  • Kolisi started seeing a therapist, which helped him learn to express himself, share feelings, and find inner peace through self-reflection. This made him a better leader.
  • He values continuous growth and learning, seeking advice from diverse sources while staying grounded in his true identity.
  • Kolisi doesn't want his leadership position to change who he is at his core. He aims to remain the same person he has always been.

3. Resilience and Mindset

  • Kolisi has developed a resilient mindset to overcome challenges, setbacks, and disappointments, driven by an inner belief that something good will come out of tough situations.
  • He focuses on maintaining inner peace and a positive mindset, which he sees as crucial for achieving goals and being an effective leader.

Kolisi's Leadership Philosophy

  • Kolisi views leadership holistically, encompassing the body, mind, and spirit. He aims to grow in all three areas, especially spiritually.
  • His leadership style is authentic, leading by being true to himself rather than emulating specific role models.
  • He hopes his legacy will be defined by his character and impact beyond just athletic achievements, such as the work of his foundation.

?Kolisi doesn’t shy away from leading by example. His work ethic and dedication on the field inspire his teammates to push themselves further. However, he also demonstrates vulnerability. He openly discusses his own challenges and setbacks, showing his team that leadership is not about perfection, but about growth and resilience. This authenticity creates a deeper connection with his teammates and fosters a more collaborative environment.“
