Leading with Courage: The Role of Joyful Risk in Personal Growth

Leadership for women inseparably intertwines with the courage to take risks. At Women Who Risk, an organization I'm proud to have founded, we recognize that risk is a multifaceted tool essential for both personal and professional growth. It's through risk that we challenge the status quo, push beyond our comfort zones, and initiate significant changes. For too many women, the negative voices of perfectionism and self-doubt inside our own minds gets in the way of actually taking, or sometimes even conceiving of, the risks that could most crucially benefit us.

By choosing to engage with risk positively, women reclaim the narrative of what it means to be bold and assertive.

Risk can be a daunting prospect, particularly in a world that has frequently sought to define and limit the potential of women. Yet, it is within this context that risk-taking becomes a liberating force. By choosing to engage with risk positively, women reclaim the narrative of what it means to be bold and assertive. This approach to risk is not about recklessness but about a thoughtful calculated embrace of possibilities that lead to growth and innovation.

Teri Bybee founded Women Who Risk to help women achieve success through joyful risk taking.

The concept of 'joyful risk' is at the core of redefining success on our own terms. When we speak of joyful risks, we're talking about the kind of risks taken with a heart full of passion and a vision for what lies ahead—the risks that make us come alive. One of the major reasons I founded Women Who Risk was because I had the abrupt realization that so much more was possible for me if I was willing to risk. Have you been playing it really safe and really small? And what more is possible for you when you're willing to risk? These are the actions that carry the potential to reshape old limits, redefine narrow roles, and dissolve the boundaries that confine us.

Embracing risk is not just about the bold moves we make but about the daily choices that reflect our commitment to living fully and leading authentically.

Taking risks is an integral part of leadership. It's about making decisions that can change the course of our careers, our relationships, and our self-conception. Women who lead with courage know that every risk carries with it the seed of opportunity—the chance to forge new strategies, to lead innovatively, and to interact with the world in ways that can reimagine what's possible.

To cultivate a joyful risk mindset, we must first acknowledge the fears and uncertainties that accompany any venture into the unknown. From there, we learn to weigh the potential benefits and drawbacks, to trust our intuition, and to leap with the knowledge that whatever the outcome, we grow stronger through the act of daring. This is where energy psychology, a tool I use in all of my work, both individual and group, can be an essential tool, helping us get to the root of the issue and gently introduce new patterns of thought and behavior.

Embracing risk is not just about the bold moves we make but about the daily choices that reflect our commitment to living fully and leading authentically. By integrating joyful risk into our leadership repertoire and the daily practice of our lives, we not only empower ourselves but also inspire a ripple effect, encouraging others to step into their power. This is why I often say: when women risk, the whole world wins! Let's redefine the landscape of female leadership together—one risk, one leap, one success at a time.
