Leading with Compassion

Leading with Compassion

I once had the privilege of speaking with Kimberly Loh, a global conflict resolution and negotiation specialist. At the time, I was conducting a series of interviews with leaders who focus on self-awareness as a foundation for better leadership. Kim shared how her multicultural background deeply shaped her perspectives. With roots in Malaysia and Singapore and a childhood spent in the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, and Singapore, she developed a deep appreciation for diverse cultures and beliefs. She has become, in many ways, a peacemaker in her own life, seeing the unique stories, dreams, and expressions that define each person.

Kim emphasized the importance of recognizing both the positive and challenging aspects when cultures intersect. This approach has broadened her worldview, encouraging her to stay open to learning from anyone, anywhere. In her book Compassionate Conversations, she explores how misunderstandings about identity often drive global conflicts.

For Kim, true understanding means moving beyond our own groups and perspectives. We need to step into others’ shoes and see where they’re coming from. Doing so builds respect and lessens judgment, helping us to move past assumptions. Remember my discussion on this in Chapter 2, “Embrace Your Inner North Star”?

Abdul understood his own identity and was equally committed to learning about mine. He embodied this approach to life and leadership without needing to travel the world; he simply cared about the people around him and invested in his local community. Perhaps that’s why he never obtained a driver’s license—he found fulfillment in connecting with those nearby. He learned from them, believed in them, and united them around shared goals.

This is the essence of compassion-driven collaboration.

Reflection:

What is one experience or challenge in my life that has significantly shaped who I am today, and how does it continue to influence my choices?
