Leading with clarity: what it means for the leaders?

The role of a leader in a workplace is essentially to guide a team of skilled professionals in the right direction. It is portrayed in many different ways. But this simple responsibility demands massive clarity to conduct it appropriately. That’s why the term ‘leading with clarity’ became of prime importance.?

Not all leaders have clarity of what they want to achieve, how they want to achieve, and what they want their team to work on. That’s why we see more than 90% of new businesses fail.?

Corresponding to these three aspects there are three measures for leading with clarity: clarity of purpose, clarity of plan, and clarity of responsibility.?

I call it ‘what’, ‘why’, ‘how’, and ‘who’ of an act.

In this post, we will talk about these three basic aspects of leading with clarity that can help any leader, entrepreneur, and small business owner irrespective of their business or team size.????

Leading with clarity: The three basics??

1. Clarity of purpose?

Elon Musk said, “One of the biggest mistakes people generally make and I am guilty of it too, is wishful thinking. You want something to be true even if it’s not true.”?

Most leaders have this prejudice that their team has the clarity of purpose. You have defined the company objectives, what we stand for, and what we aim for. Everything is documented. So, what is the need to tell everyone what our purpose is??

But believe me, your team needs to be constantly reminded of their common purpose.?

Clarity of purpose talks about the ‘what’ and ‘why’ of the act: what we need to do and why we are doing it. Once a team has a clear answer for it, you need to bring clarity to the ‘how’ aspect of an act.

2. Clarity of plan??????

It talks about how you are going to achieve the set goals. The role of a leader here is to clearly define to the team the timeline, tasks, and processes that need to be followed to achieve the goal. This set the direction right for the team to make efforts.?????

3. Clarity of responsibility?

The last step for leading with clarity is to specify each individual responsibility in the action plan. It tells you about the ‘who’ of an act. Unless each individual is clear about their role, contribution, and impact on the project, it is hard to execute a plan effectively and get things done.?

Without clarity, your team would be playing a guessing game about who is responsible for what. Not clearly defined responsibilities will result in duplication of the effort, things slipping through the cracks, and not being able to identify the risk at early stages.???

What can you do to lead with clarity??

There are many things you can do to lead with clarity but these three will lay the right foundation for your leadership:

  • Set SMART goals: It says a goal should be Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound.
  • Follow the RACI matrix: It talks about comprehensively defining who is responsible, accountable, consulted, and informed at every step of the way.?
  • Communicate with intent: Just writing down the things will not implement it. You have to communicate with intent, actively listen, and clear things so that everyone understands what needs to be done.? ? ? ???

I hope these insights will help you in leading with clarity.???
