Leading the Charge or In The Way?

Leading the Charge or In The Way?

Reckoning With Your Leadership

Leadership in the nonprofit world comes with its own set of rules.

The stakes are high—missions to fulfill, donors to convince, communities to serve. But leadership isn’t always the solution. Sometimes, it’s the problem.

Not because leaders don’t care or aren’t capable—they do, and they are. But because leadership is a reflection. How we communicate, how we’re perceived, how we show up in the room—all of it has ripple effects. And if those ripples feel uncertain, unfocused, or inconsistent, they don’t just stop at us. They flow outward, impacting teams, boards, and entire organizations.

So, the question is: Is the way you lead helping your organization move forward? Or is it unintentionally creating roadblocks?

Think about this:

  • When people think of your leadership, what’s the first word that comes to mind? Is it clear? Confident? Or something... less?
  • Do your actions and words sync with the vision you want others to see? Or are you so busy doing the work that the how gets lost?
  • When was the last time you paused to think about how you are perceived—not by donors or funders, but by the people who work with you every day?

This isn’t about "branding" in the slick, personal-promotion kind of way. It’s about consistency, trust, and clarity. Because if your leadership identity is murky, your organization’s path forward will be too.

And here’s the kicker: most of us don’t stop to think about this stuff until something cracks. A donor backs out. A staff member leaves. The messaging starts feeling stale.

But it doesn’t have to get to that point. Leadership that moves things forward is intentional. It’s self-aware. It’s willing to ask, “How do I want to be known? And how does that shape the organization I’m leading?”

The best part? These aren’t impossible questions. They’re just often overlooked in the whirlwind of day-to-day demands. But when you take the time to dig in and get clear, the impact is real—and so is the momentum.

So, where’s your leadership taking you and your organization right now?

And is it where you want to go?

Let’s have the conversation.
