Leading change from the front
How many times have we spoken or read about the importance of leading change (in any form) from the front or top? Hundreds of articles and books have been written about this topic, yet not a lot of us have actually first-hand experienced the amazing effect it has on an entire organisation, and all the employees working for that organisation's lives that change due to the decision taken by a chosen few in top leadership positions support the required change 100%..
Well, I have experienced this a few times now, both as a worker, facilitator and leader.. and I can honestly say that it is an incredible feeling, when one is supported and partnered by the leadership team in any organisation. When you suggest a change, and the entire team cannot wait to jump in and be the change the organisation need to take a step in the right direction, as this is expected and demanded from their leader. It literally influences peoples lives and attitudes throughout the entire place, and in some cases even their personal lives, in a positive way.
When the introduction to change is done right, the team does not feel like the change is done to them, but rather that they are the ones implementing the change and basically came up with the strategy on how to change their teams, KPI's and behaviors.
Unfortunately, I have also been on the opposite end of the spectrum, where even top management, cannot fully support their own decisions and strategies, push change downwards and expects organisational change to magically dissipate into the business without holding people accountable and allowing good people to lead the change. You will forever be the same, stay the same, and act very surprised when you actually start moving backwards, losing market share, good talented employees, and negatively spiral an entire organisation's hard-working employees into darkness, while still putting your pride first and not supporting the change you so desperately desire..
Life is good in the light, where we work together in our teams to ensure a positive outcome for all.. Not only putting our hands up when someone asks us who wants change, but also getting involved when we are expected, as GREAT LEADERS to drive the change we need to become effective, motivating those around us to run with us, and win the race together.
