Leading Change & Flipping the Script
On today's episode of the Everyday Leadership Podcast, I am thrilled to welcome Crystal Mahey-Morgan. She is the founder of OWN IT!, a publishing house and literacy, film, and TV agency based in East London. With over a decade of experience in the industry, Crystal has worked with various publishing brands, including Peters, Fraser and Dunlop Literary Agency and Penguin Random House, before founding her own company.?
We discussed how frustration can be a powerful driver of positive change, how leadership is intimately tied to one's identity, her experiences in the publishing industry, how OWN IT! is democratizing the arts industry and empowering creators, and much more.?
“Being a true leader is about being able to meet yourself vulnerable and that's okay.” ?

“When you're younger… the more you learn, the more you start to understand the world and its inequalities. That was my first article. It wasn't that I want to be a journalist, and I want to write for The Guardian. It was much more that these things were happening, which were moving me and frustrating me and angering me. And it was like, what can I do? How can I have a voice? And I felt that journalism was a way to have a voice.”
“I had a decent salary and I had a decent job title and I was within a company that was major, and all of these things that on paper are where you should be and what you should be doing. So saying I'm going to leave that all behind and walk away and start something from scratch, which has no guarantees that it will work out, also, with no safety net, was hugely scary. I'm really lucky.”
“There are almost no criteria, or it's almost the opposite of how traditional publishing works, where there are criteria, and understandably so, because this is the way businesses need to operate... for us... it's never been like, should we publish this person? It's always been like, how can we not?”

“What we wanted to do was have an option out there for people who could benefit from the very beginning of their career... most of the people we publish had been debut novelists... And it's important to have an alternative space out there, which allows you to own your own IP and know you're getting 50% and just not be trapped by the trappings of the industries.”
“My definition of leadership has changed over time. But I think my definition of leadership now is to be the best person I can be. Because I truly believe in leading by example, and I believe that leadership has to start with you.”
This episode was packed with insights from the amazing Crystal Mahey-Morgan, founder of OWN IT! From breaking traditional publishing moulds to prioritizing fair compensation for creators, Crystal's journey is a testament to the power of frustration, courage, and intuition. Don’t sleep on it! ??????
