LEADING BUILDING SAFETY

Last week Project Four Safety Solutions Ltd. attended the second Culture Change in Construction conference with Max Meadows + client Andy Cox of Trigon DM

Here are just some of the highlights + key statements from the conference:

Steve Elliot (Chief Executive Officer, Chemical Industries Association / Non-Executive Chair, Building A Safer Future): BSF/BSA sits above all other priorities, true collaboration + commitment required, focus on cultural change.

Dame Judith Hackett (Chair if the Independent Review of Building Regulations and Fire Safety / Chair, Industry Safety Steering Group(ISSG)):

Summary of key comments....today's conference is about bridging the gap between those who have + haven't started the BSF Charter Champion process. Cannot fathom why in the city today there are single staircases being designed and not dual. The argument of 'its compliant now' is not acceptable...standards are changing, and this is also a betrayal of those who will live there. Do the right thing!?The BSA is real, registration for existing buildings is days away and if not done by October you will be in breach of the law.

• We can't wait for the subordinate legislation, we have enough to act now.
• More board level commitment.
• Do it because you know you should - we must take the lead and rebuild trust + confidence.
• This is the start of a very long journey...develop means to support regulatory regime.
• Leaders or laggers- where do you sit.
• Australia is ahead on BSF, a model we will shamelessly follow.

Chris Griffin McTiernan (Deputy Chief Inspector of Buildings / The Building Safety Regulator):?what where you doing on 14th June 2017? Race to the bottom role in tragedy. Legislation will sit alongside leadership - how we make changes is down to us/the industry.

Concerns raised on 56% of HRRB's in 2022 by HSE. Be ready...understand what's coming + step up take ownership + leadership, act now.

On existing building registration (details expected imminently): It may take 3-5 years, risk matrix approach, indication of where you are in the first 3-5 years - invited to submit Safety Case in advance.
