Leading Big Changes in Small Healthcare Organizations

STARTING A MOVEMENT

“You say you want a revolution. Well, you know we all want to change the world.” -- The Beatles

I’d assert that true leadership goes beyond “tweaking or maintaining” - it’s about leading positive changes that truly make things better in big ways for a long time.

Leadership, in this way, may be likened to “starting a movement.” Movements don't happen by chance; they're deliberate acts of mobilizing people around a shared purpose. They are intentional, not accidental.?

So, what makes a movement powerful?

  1. Size Doesn’t Matter, Impact Does: It can start small but ripple into a culture-shifting wave.
  2. Ideas That Shape Tomorrow: Movements embrace creativity, positivity, and deference to front-line expertise.
  3. Momentum is Key: Each success breeds more engagement, motivation, and purpose, propelling the movement forward.

Need examples??

Google "Dove Real Beauty," “Dignity Hello Humankindness," or "IHI 100,000 Lives."?

These movements exemplify the power of collective action and shared vision.

To lead a big movement in your small healthcare organization, consider these tactics:

  1. Inspiration Formula: Capture attention, appeal to logic and emotion, and issue a compelling call to action.
  2. Feedback Loop: Regularly assess progress through data, observation, and feedback.
  3. Direct Dialogue: Maintain a positive feedback culture, with a 3:1 ratio of praise to critique.
  4. Anchor Statement: Craft a concise elevator pitch to anchor your movement's purpose.
  5. Volunteer Army: Empower employee-driven teams to champion the cause.
  6. Vital Time: Allocate dedicated time to nurture and advance the movement.
  7. Continuous Improvement: Embrace a cycle of planning, executing, evaluating, and adapting.
  8. Celebrate Milestones: Acknowledge and amplify achievements to sustain momentum.
  9. Nurture Relationships: Build trust and collaboration among stakeholders.
  10. Transparent Communication: Establish consistent communication channels to keep everyone informed and engaged.

In over three decades of leadership, I've found nothing as fulfilling as championing positive change. That, to me, is the essence of leadership.

"Leadership is the capacity to translate vision into reality." – Warren Bennis

Wishing you success as you journey to lead and inspire change.

There is so much solid truth in this short article, Sue. To consider big change in any organization can be a daunting task. I particularly appreciate the "appeal to logic AND emotion" and the benefits of creating a concise anchor statement.
