[Leading Better] The Three Essentials for an Innovative Team

We know that the first essential for any sustainable human interaction is trust. That’s a given. Trust happens between two people.

But across a team, we need psychological safety – a higher level of trust. It’s at the collective level

It's the feeling that team members are safe to take interpersonal risks.

  • I can ask questions.
  • I can openly share my ideas.
  • I can bring my full self to work.
  • I can push back even on my manager without fear of retaliation.

With psychological safety, everyone works to ensure that safety, not just the leader.

Psychological safety is not ‘On’ or ‘Off’ like a switch. It’s a ladder with three levels.

Level 1 Feeling Welcome: People accept me as a person. They respect my opinion. I can ask for help. It's okay to talk about personal issues. We connect personally.

Level 2 Courageous Conversations: a safe space for people to ask questions, bring their unique perspectives, discuss tough problems, and encourage disagreement for the sake of improving how they operate.

Level 3 Innovation: I can challenge. I can push back. I can think differently. It's okay to make mistakes and to learn from them.

A leader can charge a team with becoming more innovative, but that will never happen unless the two previous levels of ‘Feeling Welcome’ and ‘Courageous Conversations’ have been established.
