[Leading Better] How leaders create innovation streams
To survive, teams and companies need to innovate, access fresh thinking. Ideally create idea-streams.
Brainstorming is the usual go-to… but 60 mins to come up with our best 4-5 ideas, it's too stop-start.
The greatest determinant of the quality of ideas is the quantity of ideas. Idea-streams.
Bob Sutton’s Stanford research tells us: 2000 ideas, yields ~1000 prototypes, yields ~5 products, yielding 1 commercial success. 2000:1
The whole mindset needs to be on producing quantity: as many good, bad and indifferent ideas. You need a good idea worth polishing.
Effective ideation is a process, not a singular, cold-start event.
Beforehand, prime your people: share the challenge ahead of time and get them to come up with at least 10 ideas (ie a volume of possibilities).
Frame it in terms of, “How might we…?” and provide them multiple perspectives that need addressing.
Begin the session with a warmup, eg What are great ingredients to make a good smoothie? And go around the room. Sets the tone of ease.

During the session, strictly apply Improv’s ‘Yes, and…’ philosophy. A person starts with an idea and the next person says, “Yes, and we could make it even better by…”
Conclude the session with, “These ideas are great, but not our best. We’re going to meet in a week. Between now and then, continue these conversations… and be particularly alert for the emerging new ideas that are stimulated.”
Idea-flow is the life blood of innovation, and innovation is the life-blood of future flourishing. Essential.
