In my last article “Wanna be your boss’s favorite employee” I had placed the responsibility on the team member to discover the dream that the leader cherished and requested to “live it” in order get into his shoes and thereby win his heart. But this does not mean that it is not the task of the leader to inspire his team members to live his dreams, the dream of taking the company close to the vision. It is in fact, a TRUE leader who inspires his team members to dream the same dream that he too sees with his eyes open.
I believe and have learned that to LEAD one should be a HUMAN first.
In my profession journey I had the privilege to work under the able guidance of leaders like Mr. Bhaskar Bhatt in Titan, Mr Gopalratnam Kannan and Mr. Christian Leiggener while at The Swatch Group, Mr. Carl Elsener and Alexander Bennouna in my current association with Victorinox. These great leaders had one thing in common they were HUMAN first. Helpful, Understanding, can Mingle, Amuse and Nurture.
They inspired me to live their dreams, a dream that also taught me to share a vulnerable trust among my team members, engage in productive conflicts, commit to the cause, stay accountable and finally place the common goal over personal benefits to get the result under the wings.
An unbeatable organizing is nothing more than a series of great relationships cascading throughout the entire enterprise all focused on one and a common inspirational outcome.
So to build this kind of a relationship the leader has to stretch and reach out to the level of his team members. Enabling him to be in their platform first and then elevate them to a level where the leader currently is and this is possible only when one is a HUMAN (Helpful, Understanding, Mingle, Amuse, Nurture) first.
Once one has these HUMAN qualities then it is possible to LEAD. LEADing is all about Listening, being Empathetic, Adding value and ultimately Delighting. Gandhi the eternal leader did just this and had the entire nation following him. So be a HUMAN and LEAD you shall have a team ready to follow you, happy, inspired and above all willing to fulfil your dreams!
Once the leader stretches to reach the level of the team member it is important to LISTEN to him, his views, his ideas, his inspiration his ambitions, his shortcomings and his limitations. After having understood these it is important to EMPATHISE, so that he gets the feeling that you actually understand where he is coming from and care for him. This in turn helps to earn his confidence. From here one needs to ADD VALUE, teach him what he is weak on, guide him to give his best and boost his confidence, so that he can do what is required for his success and for realization of your dream. With your guidance he should overcome his fears, and this finally delights him. A happy, dedicated, loyal and trained soul is the best team member a leader can wish for...
Remember “The bigger the dream the more important is the team.”
