Leading with Agility: Navigating Change and Overcoming Adversity

As a business leader, you know that making impactful decisions is crucial to success. One of the most powerful influences in my life was my grandmother, who taught me that making a decision is the most impactful thing one can do. And six years ago, I made a defining decision to pursue an MBA despite my fears and doubts.

Defining moments are pivotal points in our lives that have a transformative effect on our perceptions and behaviors. These moments challenge our beliefs and urge us to behave differently, revealing our true character. Inevitably, the road of life will be bumpy, testing our commitment to our purpose. But some individuals see bumps in the road of life as obstacles, while some see them as opportunities.

Defining moments have the power to shape our lives, and leaders who can recognize and navigate through them can become more resilient, focused, and agile. Here are four steps to help leaders move forward through defining moments:

  1. Embrace adversity and find purpose: Adversity can be an opportunity to learn and grow, and to find purpose in unexpected ways. Consider the example of Jamie Dimon, CEO of JPMorgan Chase, who faced a life-threatening bout of throat cancer in 2014. Instead of retreating, he embraced the challenge and returned to work with renewed energy and purpose, leading his company to record profits and earning the respect of his colleagues and competitors alike.
  2. Face your fears: Fear is a natural response to uncertainty and change, but it can also hold us back from realizing our full potential. Take the example of Ursula Burns, former CEO of Xerox, who grew up in a housing project in New York City and went on to become the first Black woman to run a Fortune 500 company. Burns has said that one of her defining moments came early in her career when she was asked to present to a group of senior executives. She was terrified, but she pushed through her fear and delivered a strong performance, setting the stage for her future success.
  3. Reflect and Recharge: Defining moments can challenge our beliefs and assumptions, but they can also provide opportunities for reflection and growth. Consider the example of Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, who took over the company in 2014 during a challenging period of transition. Nadella credits his success to his practice of daily meditation, which helps him find clarity and perspective amid the chaos of business. By taking time to reflect and recharge, leaders can find new solutions to old problems and stay focused on their goals.
  4. Create a plan and take action: Defining moments can be overwhelming, but they also offer opportunities for growth and change. To move forward, it’s important to create a plan of action that is specific, measurable, and achievable. Take the example of Indra Nooyi, former CEO of PepsiCo, who set an ambitious goal for her company to reduce sugar and salt in its products. By creating a clear plan and communicating it effectively to her team, Nooyi was able to drive significant change across her organization and improve the health outcomes of millions of people around the world.

By embracing adversity, facing our fears, reflecting and recharging, then taking action, leaders can turn defining moments into opportunities for growth and transformation. The only constant in life is change, but with the right mindset and tools, we can navigate through it and come out stronger on the other side.
