A barrier is like a coin. There are two sides to its roles, as there are 2 sides to a coin. Two opposites that co-exist to keep order. Leadership often "sucks" because of barriers. Barriers that are real or only figments of our imagination. Sometimes we collide with these barriers at the most unexpected times. Not all the barriers can be seen or handled in calculating ways.
Many years ago, I had a talk with a leader. This person made it clear to me at that stage that I was not a leader, but only a good servant. Those words are imprinted in my brain until today, but not in the way you might think. I actually used those words to say; "Okay, that might be true from your perspective, but what type of leader do I want to be". And guess what; I actually came to the conclusion that I like to be a servant leader. So while the person might have had some bad intentions with the words that was used, it was actually the fuel I needed to refine my own leadership style. At the end, this person confirmed to me the type of leader I am, and for this I have much appreciation towards this person. Even though it sounds like it was easy for me, it wasn't.
Many of the barriers leaders will face, true or false, takes time and energy to overcome. I want to encourage you not to allow these barriers to stop you in your path as a leader. Whether you are at the start, in the middle or nearing the finishing line, let those barriers make you stronger rather than paralyzing you.
