Leadership Would be Great if It Weren’t for All the People
In the privacy of a coaching session, I have had more than one leader secretly confess that life was just so much easier as an individual contributor. Stepping into a leadership role can feel like moving from a world of black-and-white clarity to a gray, squishy realm filled with complex human dynamics. As an individual contributor, success was often defined by clear, measurable outcomes. You knew what was expected, and you could directly control your performance. But leadership? That’s a different ballgame altogether.?
?
The Shift from Black-and-White to Gray?
In the individual contributor role, the rules were straightforward:?
? Meet your targets.?
? Deliver quality work.?
? Collaborate when needed.?
?When you become a leader of people, the landscape shifts dramatically. The clear lines blur, and you’re thrust into a world where success depends on your ability to manage, motivate, and inspire others. Leadership isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about navigating uncertainty and guiding your team through it. Here are some strategies to help you thrive in this new, less defined space:?
?
1. Empathy Over Efficiency?
As a leader, understanding your team’s needs and motivations becomes paramount. Empathy helps you connect with your team on a deeper level, fostering trust and loyalty. Remember, your team’s emotional well-being directly impacts their performance. But remember, balance empathy with accountability to avoid enabling a powerless team.?
?
2. Communication is Key?
Transparent and frequent communication can alleviate much of the ambiguity. Share your vision, provide regular feedback, and create an open environment where team members feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and concerns.?
?
3. Flexibility and Adaptability?
In the gray area of leadership, rigidity is your enemy. Be prepared to adapt your approach based on the situation and the individuals involved. Flexibility allows you to respond effectively to changing circumstances and unexpected challenges.?

4. Cultivate a Growth Mindset?
Encourage continuous learning and development within your team. A growth mindset not only helps individuals improve but also fosters a culture of innovation and resilience. Embrace mistakes as learning opportunities for yourself and your team.?
?
5. Delegate and Empower?
Let go of the need to control every aspect of the work. Trust your team members and delegate responsibilities. Empowering others not only develops their skills but also frees you to focus on strategic initiatives and long-term goals.?
?
In the end, leadership would indeed be great if it weren’t for all the people—but it would also be far less meaningful. It’s the people who bring diversity, creativity, and energy to the workplace, making your journey as a leader truly worthwhile.?
?
Reflect and Refresh:?
? What challenges have you faced in your transition to leadership, and how did you overcome them??
? How can you apply empathy and flexibility in your leadership approach this week??

Often people are caught off guard when they move from a successful individual contributor role to a leadership role where they are now responsible FOR the success of the individual contributors on their team. My go to philosophy/reminder is "as a leader, people are NOT an interruption of your work, they ARE your work". Merrylue Martin, these are great and actionable tips and mindset reminders in this article!
