Leadership vs. Management

Something Silly:

Peter Griffin (Family Guy) said:?

  • “I have an idea so smart that my head would explode if I even began to know what I was talking about.”

Something Serious:

Peter Drucker said:

  • "Management is doing things right; leadership is doing the right things."

57,100,000 results?

That’s the number of results on the topic regarding the differences (or comparisons) to being a Leader vs. Manager.

This of course raises quite a few questions in the new norms we are living in, such as does it still matter?

Well, Yes and No.

Let’s start with something most of us can (hopefully) agree on…

  • Leaders Set the Vision... Managers Follow It
  • Leaders Think Ideas... Managers Think Execution
  • Leaders Inspire People... Managers Drive Their Success
  • Leaders Look in the Future... Managers Work In the Present
  • Leaders Shape the Culture... Managers Endorse It

Due to the current pandemic, workplace culture and the workforce alone have endured one of the biggest resets so maybe it’s time to focus less on the job title and more on the skills necessary to lead during these uncertain times.

As we push through the old norms and create new ones, Leaders and Managers must possess the following skills by 2022 according to The World Economic Forum :

  • Analytical thinking?and?innovation
  • Active learning?and learning strategies
  • Creativity,?originality, and initiative
  • Technology design?and?programming
  • Critical thinking?and analysis
  • Complex?problem-solving
  • Leadership and?social influence
  • Emotional?intelligence
  • Reasoning,?problem-solving
  • Systems analysis and?evaluation

No matter what side you are on in this conversation, one thing still remains:

Some managers do not practice leadership, while some people lead without a managerial role.

Let’s discuss.?

This is a great point - we can't always please everyone. Some people aren't our people. We can try our best to listen, take action, be respectful and let people do their work, but it simply might not work out. Not everyone is called to this role and that's ok
