A leadership viewpoint on the economic impact of illegal immigration

The economic impact of illegal immigration is a complex and debated topic, and its effects can vary depending on the context and the specific circumstances of a country's economy. Today I thought I would explore the topic of illegal immigration through an economic lens while bypassing any political perspectives on the topic. Many Americans are economic illiterates and therefore we need to base all informed perspectives on an approach that works for us all. Below are some key points to consider when discussing the economic impact of illegal immigration.

  • Low-Skilled Jobs: In many countries, unauthorized immigrants often fill low-skilled or manual labor positions that may be difficult to fill with native-born workers. This can benefit certain industries such as agriculture, construction, and hospitality, as it helps maintain a stable workforce and keeps labor costs relatively low.
  • Mothers Childcare: Corporations and their leadership often lack a human perspective on the workforce and their needs. We must acknowledge that while women are escaping traditional roles and pursuing careers that this might not have been possible without having access to affordable daycare. Sure, women who have employers that champion remote work can often pursue both a career and maintain a family are becoming increasingly rare as corporations champion their return to the office policies. If immigrant babysitters and nanny's enable women to climb the corporate ladder then society should acknowledge the benefit of this.
  • Economic Growth: The presence of unauthorized immigrants can contribute to overall economic growth by increasing the size of the labor force and the demand for goods and services. This, in turn, can lead to job creation and economic expansion.
  • Tax Contributions: Unauthorized immigrants often pay taxes, including sales taxes, property taxes (indirectly through rent payments), and even income taxes in some cases using Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers (ITINs). These tax contributions can offset some of the costs associated with public services.
  • Social Services: On the flip side, illegal immigrants may also use certain public services such as education and healthcare, which can impose costs on local and state governments. So the challenge is really how to spread the income earned by taxation across the spectrum of government entities.
  • Wage Impact: Some studies suggest that the presence of unauthorized immigrants may exert downward pressure on wages for low-skilled jobs, which can negatively affect native-born workers in similar occupations. I would argue that all forms of immigration exert downward pressure on wages not just for low-skilled jobs but also high-skilled jobs as well. Imagine a world where there were zero IT immigrants from India and what the IT salaries and the current employment situation for out of work tech workers.
  • Regional Variation: The economic impact of illegal immigration can also vary regionally. Some areas may see more pronounced benefits or costs due to their specific economic circumstances and the concentration of unauthorized immigrants.

It's important to note that the economic impact of illegal immigration is a subject of ongoing research and debate, and there is no one-size-fits-all answer. Policymakers and researchers continue to study this issue to better understand its complexities and inform immigration policies that balance economic, social, and legal considerations.

At no time in our nation have we needed better leadership than in government and corporate America. Corporations must navigate a complex landscape when it comes to illegal immigration. They need to balance legal compliance, ethical considerations, public relations, and labor market dynamics. The stance of any given corporation on this issue can vary widely, depending on its specific industry, location, and business model, as well as its commitment to ethical and legal standards.

Levels of personal trust are associated with race and ethnicity, age, education and household income

Conclusion

Trust is an essential elixir for public life and neighborly relations, and when Americans think about trust these days, they worry. Two-thirds of adults think other Americans have little or no confidence in the federal government or in major corporations. Majorities believe the public’s confidence in the U.S. government, corporations and in each other is shrinking, and most believe a shortage of trust in government, corporations and in other citizens makes it harder to solve some of the nation’s key problems.

If we believe that cleaning up the trust environment is vital to our economic success, we must outline how important it is to have a leadership model that has components of servant-based as well as statesmanship at its core. This leadership crisis lives within each of us as we need to also improve confidence in fellow Americans as a top priority.

James McGovern I find your dispassionate, analytical approach to an emotional subject to be refreshing. I understand why you limited your discussion to the economy, but there are other factors that need to be discussed and I assume that you intend to discuss them at some point. The first topic of discussion would be refugees. If you believe in global warming, as I do, you also accept the fact that refugees are going to come, legally or illegally. They're going to come because the survival of themselves and their families depend upon it. If you put up a wall, they will tunnel under it, or climb over it or go around it. It is simply a fact. If the climate continues its current course, we can expect that the current trickle, perceived as a flood, will become a deluge.
