Leadership Undefined

This term is used excessively in today's world - business, political, not-for-profit, sport. We see seminars and articles on what true leadership is and how to know when you have it at the top of your organization. I'd like you to consider a novel approach - Leadership is NOT defined!

I'll admit, I am tempted to go to Webster's Dictionary and provide the "official definition" - a technique that many use to establish credibility. I'm not going to do that. Instead, I'd ask you to think back to a time when you were in the presence of a True Leader. What did it feel like? What did he or she say or do? Did they have a presence? Was there an unexplained energy in the room or sports arena? Was there a mystique and manner that you couldn't quite explain?

I don't believe that one goes to school to learn leadership. Leadership is developed in many cases; in other cases, it was always there - and like a natural, beautiful diamond with latent value and power - it is polished and manifested. Leaders emerge when the temperature rises.

The leaders traits and characteristics? In my opinion they Inspire. They provide Confidence. They ask questions so that you feel empowered to arrive at the right answer on your own. They instill a strength at all times and are able to turn up the volume when adversity is present. Most great leaders do this with quiet confidence. Their motives are not driven by their own recognition, but by team results.

Next time you are looking for True Leadership, look around with a quiet resolve. You might be surprised to find leadership in the most unusual place. Also be open to the possibility that someday, that True Leader can be you. Believe.
