One of my friends who worked with me in the past pinged me today sharing her story.?We both like to believe that we are strong women, so when life gets tough we call each other up and pat each other.
We both started as English Language Trainers and have received multiple promotions. However, as our company closed down we moved to different companies.?
In our field we often feel that we do not get equal recognition. However let’s first understand what happened to her.
Her Story
As a part of the core team at our company, I was surprised by our CEO's recent announcement of mandatory training sessions every Saturday. The CEO declared that each trainer must take turns explaining their subject matter to the operations team. This directive came with a tone of anger, with the CEO threatening to turn all Saturdays into full workdays if necessary. Feeling perplexed and somewhat intimidated, I left the CEO's cabin without fully understanding the rationale behind his decision.
While our chat was over I was still thinking about it. Out of habit, I drew a plus and started the SWOT analysis.
Here’s what my analysis about this situation is:
Analysis
Leadership Style: The CEO's behavior reflects a dictatorial leadership style rather than one characterized by collaboration or communication. His decision to implement mandatory Saturday training sessions without prior discussion or explanation demonstrates a lack of transparency and inclusivity in decision-making.
Communication: Effective leaders communicate openly and transparently with their teams, providing context and rationale behind their decisions. The CEO's failure to communicate the purpose of the Saturday sessions and his resorting to anger and threats instead create confusion and resentment among team members.
Emotional Intelligence: Leaders with high emotional intelligence understand the impact of their words and actions on others. The CEO's angry outburst and threats not only fail to motivate or inspire but also create a hostile work environment where team members feel anxious and demotivated.

Trust and Respect: Trust and respect are fundamental to a healthy work environment. The CEO's behavior erodes trust and respect among team members, as they feel disregarded and undervalued. Employees are less likely to engage fully or contribute positively when they feel disrespected by their leaders.
Team Morale: The impact of the CEO's behavior on team morale is significant. Employees may feel disheartened, demoralized, and even resentful, leading to decreased productivity, increased absenteeism, and higher turnover rates. A toxic work environment characterized by fear and mistrust hampers collaboration and innovation.
Impact
Confusion and Anxiety: Team members may feel confused and anxious about the sudden change in schedule and the lack of clarity regarding its purpose. Without understanding the rationale behind the CEO's decision, employees are left feeling uncertain about their roles and responsibilities.
Resentment and Disengagement: The CEO's angry outburst and threats breed resentment among team members, leading to disengagement and apathy towards their work. When employees feel undervalued and disrespected by their leaders, they are less likely to invest their time and energy into their tasks.
Decreased Motivation: A hostile work environment dampens employee motivation and enthusiasm. Instead of feeling inspired to excel, employees may adopt a "bare minimum" mindset, focusing solely on meeting minimum requirements rather than striving for excellence.
Erosion of Trust: Trust is essential for effective leadership and teamwork. The CEO's behavior erodes trust among team members, creating a culture of suspicion and skepticism. When employees doubt the intentions and integrity of their leaders, collaboration and cooperation suffer.
Impact on Retention and Recruitment: A toxic work environment driven by authoritarian leadership and poor communication can negatively impact both employee retention and recruitment efforts. Talented individuals are unlikely to remain in an environment where they feel undervalued and unsupported, while prospective candidates may be deterred from joining the organization altogether.
On a final note, the CEO's behavior not only reflects poor leadership skills but also has a detrimental impact on team dynamics, morale, and organizational success. Addressing the underlying issues of communication, respect, and trust is essential for fostering a positive work environment and driving employee engagement and productivity.
