Leadership Trends for 2023

Leadership Trends for 2023

Being a leader is not easy, especially during constant changes, as we have experienced for the past few years. Yet, the reward is the pride and satisfaction of their ability to lead, inspire and help their team to perform and grow in their careers.

What leadership trends do we expect to see in 2023?

For the past 3 years, we faced the pandemic, great resignations, quiet quitting, flexible working, and changes of work arrangements to hybrid, war, inflation rate, and the anticipation of the recession. We went through A LOT as an individual, let alone leaders and organizations!

Moving into 2023, leadership skills will only be increasingly important. According to a Gartner survey on HR Top Priorities in 2023, the number 1 priority is Leaders' and Managers' Effectiveness. The ability for organizations to thrive depends not only on employees but leaders with great leadership skills.

But it's not the traditional leadership skills we have been practicing for the past 30 years.

Changes in leadership approach

The approach to leadership based on authority, power, command, and control has to shift and focus on open communication, collaboration, and coaching.

Teams and organizations are getting more complex with diverse talents, increasing numbers of hybrid work arrangements, and the trend in agile organizations to constantly change and shift job roles. Command and control will only create more stress for leaders and teams.

Increasing how leaders can encourage open communication and provide constructive feedback to coach the team members and brainstorm solutions will be the best way to help optimize teams and individuals.

The crucial need for emotional intelligence in leaders

Environments are constantly changing. There will always be uncertainty ahead. That's the nature of the business and economy at scale.?

VUCA (short for volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity) will not go away. As a result, leaders must practice improving emotional intelligence to help themselves be more aligned and help their teams feel safe and at ease with their leaders.

Leaders with strong emotional intelligence can navigate uncertainty and effectively support and manage their teams.

The focus on being inclusive leaders

Organizations and teams will be healthier when we embrace differences rather than rejecting them, as the workforce is increasingly complex. Organizations that embrace diversity, equity, and inclusion will be able to tap into the potential of their talent and enable them to come together and help solve complex problems.?

Thus, we need leaders to be inclusive. They need to be open-minded and listen more. As a result, being directive or the "My Way or High Way" will not gain any benefits from having diverse teams. It only leads to more turnover and employee retention issues.

Are your leaders ready for “the future of work” way of leading?

Is your organization asking your leaders to perform and not giving them sufficient tools and knowledge to be successful in their roles as high-performing leaders?

Research from West Monroe shows most managers who oversee one to two employees, 59% of managers who oversee one to two employees, have no leadership training at all. 41% among those who oversee three to five workers report similar.

While organizations are asking leaders and executives to perform, they will need to support them to do a great job. Without great leadership skills that are current and effective, your organization will suffer greatly from employee performance and talent retention.?
