Leadership transformation and sustainable success in Procurement

The concepts of leadership transformation and sustainable success are explored in the Map & Territory Procurement Professional Development Program.

From Hero Leadership to Systems Leadership

Individual heroics, where procurement leaders try to manage everything themselves, often lead to burnout and inefficiencies - or a retreat to more pedestrian, administrative tasks. Transitioning to a transformative systems leadership model focuses on creating robust processes and culture that ensure sustainable success regardless of individual effort.

Transformative Learning

The Map & Territory program encourages participants to challenge their current worldviews, making space for new ideas. This shift aligns with the move from hero leadership to transformative systems leadership, focusing on building sustainable, inclusive systems rather than relying on individual effort.

Overcoming Barriers

The program addresses organisational resistance to sustainability and inclusivity. It helps participants understand how moving from individual heroics to systemic change can overcome limitations and risks such as ignorance, skill shortages, stubborn habits, incentives misalignment, and fear of risk.

Professional Development and Sustainability

Developing leaders who can create systems that sustain success is crucial. The Map & Territory program focuses on sustainability and inclusivity in procurement, emphasizing transformative learning and collaboration.

Cross-Functional Understanding

Map & Territory aims to help cross-functional teams and senior stakeholders understand the value of procurement. This aligns with developing systems leaders who see the bigger picture and understand how different pieces fit together to drive success.

Interactive Participation

By engaging in discussions, debates, and networking, participants can shift from a hero mentality to a systems mindset. They learn how to build resilient and adaptable procurement processes through activities such as:

  • Discussion and Debate: Interactive sessions where participants discuss current challenges and debate solutions, fostering critical thinking and collaborative problem-solving.
  • Networking Events: Opportunities to connect with peers, industry leaders, and experts to share experiences and best practices.
  • Game-Playing and Simulations: Engaging activities that simulate real-world procurement scenarios, helping participants practice and refine their skills in a risk-free environment.

Real-Life Examples and Practical Applications

Learning from real-life examples of effective systems leaders helps illustrate the power of this approach. With guidance from global speakers, Map & Territory participants gain insights into creating systems that promote sustainability and inclusivity. Learning from diverse content and perspectives helps them see beyond individual efforts to systemic change.

The Speaker Faculty offered tangible examples to illustrate measurable outcomes. By addressing cultural differences and outlining clear strategies to overcome resistance, they strengthened the case for cross-functional collaboration to rise above mediocrity. Their emphasis on real-world applications and practical insights effectively showcased the shift from heroic leadership to sustainable, systems-based leadership.

Collaborative Learning

The program's focus on interactive participation and community networking mirrors the importance of moving beyond individual heroics to collective success through systems. Participants engage in:

  • Hackathon: Fast-paced, collaborative event where teams develop innovative solutions to procurement challenges. The M&T hackathon format offers a safe and supportive environment for creativity and teamwork, leading to actionable outcomes.
  • Online Workshops: Hands-on sessions that explore into specific topics, such as sustainability in supply chains or the use of tech in procurement -facilitated by the M&T Speaker Faculty. These workshops provide practical skills and knowledge that participants can apply immediately.

Bringing It All Together

Integrating the principles of systems leadership within the Map & Territory Procurement Professional Development Program helps participants become more effective leaders. This opportunity for transformation enables them to drive significant and sustainable improvements within their organisations, aligning with the program's goals of exploring sustainability, inclusivity, and transformative learning.
