This week, we are proud to spotlight Shweata N. Hegde’s inspiring journey during the SciComm Social - Winning Move’?session at the Science Journalists Association of India (SJAI) 2024 conference. As co-founder of the science podcast series IndiaAsksWhy, Hegde shared insights into how her podcast is reshaping science communication. Mentored by Megha Kumar from CCMB and IndiaBioscience, the podcast answers everyday scientific questions that spark curiosity among students, making science relatable and accessible.

From exploring the science behind the smell of rain to uncovering why tigers have stripes, IndiaAsksWhy delves into a diverse range of topics. Through their thoughtful and conversational approach, Hegde and Manglunia have created a platform where science becomes engaging and easier to grasp, fostering meaningful connections between students and scientific concepts.

Shweata shared with SciRio, IndiaAsksWhy is one of the early adopters of podcasting to communicate science. In each episode, two curious characters, Utsuka and Jigyasa, explore questions through research and conversations with scientists. We deliberately chose this conversational format to engage our target audience—high schoolers. Over the years, the podcast has reached thousands of school students through episodes and school visits. All episodes are archived on our website and platforms like IndiaBioscience and Jigyasa for students and teachers.”

She further reflected, “For us, the impact goes beyond numbers. The feedback we receive during interactions, the curiosity in students’ eyes during school visits, and educators’ positive experiences in using the podcast as a teaching tool are invaluable. These experiences define our mission as a science communication initiative.”
