Starting out in a leadership position or wanting to grow into a leadership position can be difficult. Sometimes people don't follow you, sometimes you don't know what to say or do, and that is okay. Leadership starts with you leading by example. Do you show up on time? What type of energy do you bring? Are you present and attentive? How do you treat others? Do you correct bad behavior? Do you reward or acknowledge good behavior? These are a few questions to audit where you are. Leading by example is the only way to lead and will build your foundation of skills needed to grow your impact. Leading by example needs to be consistent, genuine and progressive. Set goals for yourself, your team and set standards to achieve those goals. How you do one thing is how you do everything. Leading by example means having attention to detail in appearance, attitude and the people around you. Little actions such as picking up trash, cleaning up workspaces, holding doors for others are actions that align to leading by example for those around you. This is how culture starts, leaders develop and impact grows. This leadership series will continue with different aspects of leadership in upcoming articles. If this helps you, share it and tell someone to help them.
