The Leadership Reset - Embracing the Power of the Pause.

On Friday morning, I arrived home from a week in Madeira feeling fresh and inspired. It was a stunningly beautiful and tranquil retreat far from the usual demands of everyday life and an opportunity to reset. This change of scenery was not merely a chance to relax but a profound reminder of how stepping away offers an unmatched perspective on life, purpose, and fulfilment.

As leaders, many operate under the notion that productivity equates to unbroken commitment to our work, teams and projects. We push forward, driven by our responsibilities and ambitions, while often ignoring the power of stepping back.

However, meaningful growth and clarity arise when we intentionally pause, creating space for something new to emerge.

Rediscovery and Rejuvenation

Time away from our familiar routines, surrounded by new sights, sounds, and experiences, can be a catalyst for profound rejuvenation not only for the body and mind but to create a clear space to allow new possibilities to bubble up from a rested and inspired consciousness. Holidays are not just about escaping; they offer a chance to return to ourselves. Immersed in nature or simply at ease, we connect with our creativity, imagination, and joy—all of which become overshadowed by day-to-day routines. The rut of routines is disturbed and, like newly turned soil, new life springs forth.

Fresh Perspective on Challenges

When we’re constantly engaged with our challenges, we often lose sight of the bigger picture. We can be myopic and preoccupied with the narrow vision of solving issues rather than creating new ways to see and approach situations. Taking a break resets our mental landscape, allowing us to revisit the long-standing problems with a renewed outlook. For instance, a few days in Madeira’s peaceful landscapes opened my mind to nuances and opportunities I hadn’t considered and inspired fresh solutions that had seemed elusive.

Enhanced Resilience and Energy Resilience is one of our greatest assets as leaders. However, resilience doesn’t grow through endless exertion; it’s fortified by intentional rest. When we step back, our minds and bodies repair, returning us to our commitments stronger, sharper, and more capable. Committed breaks, paradoxically, make us more productive and far more grounded in our roles.

Take a moment to ask yourself: When did you ringfenced holiday time and didn’t take any work with you? When was the last time you were out of office” both physically and mentally?

Rekindling Relationships

Time away also allows us to reconnect meaningfully with those closest to us. Free from the usual distractions, we can be present and attuned to our loved ones. These moments strengthen bonds and remind us of the “why” behind much of our ambitions—a reminder that purpose isn’t just about professional milestones but also about the legacy we leave in our relationships.

Inviting Fulfilment and Joy

Ultimately, joy and fulfilment flourish when we give ourselves permission to live fully, embracing both work and leisure. We’re not meant to live in perpetual pursuit but rather in the ebb and flow of ambition and ease.

This week, I encourage you to reflect on how you can create moments to pause and invite a sense of freedom and renewal into your life. Taking a break isn’t about stepping away from success; it’s about stepping closer to it with a clearer mind and a fuller heart.

So true especially with startups who get so engrossed in getting there that they have no time to see there might need to flip to a different direction.

Fiona Ross This is one of the more important truths. I was just having this conversation with Brandon Lee as well. He took a pause recently and recommends it for all.
