Leadership Point of View from the All-In Summit 2024 - What type of MA do you have?

I was fortunate enough to attend the 3rd Annual All-In Summit this week which is the conference that spun out of the weekly All-In Podcast.

Having spent a lifetime working for and with great leaders and now for the past 12 years having helped CEO's and executives develop their own leadership style I thought I would share what I observed from the presenters in the hopes that it can help you on your own personal journey.

First Obvious Point - You don't lead in a vacuum - You have to resonate with others

Every presenter was a leader in their field of some note, many having one name status, Elon, Sergei, Thiel, Benioff.

What I found interesting were the subtle ways in which they resonated with the besties and the audience.

Some were taking in the energy from the moment and in a guttural reaction thumping back.

Both Elon Musk and Marc Benioff couldn't take their eyes off the crowd, we were their people and they had to resonate with us.

There were several moments where like a tribal leader they would hit themselves in the gut and bounce the energy out to the crowd as they made an emphatic statement. I am sure they didn't even know they were doing it, it was just part of their style of communication.

Of course, we in the audience were fired up by this and like watching the wave at an LA Dodger Game the energy just started to build.

Others were almost agnostic to the crowd.

These thinkers were comfortable resonating personally with the person they were speaking with but not looking to engage the audience other than to accept the clapping.

Both Google co-founder Sergei Brin and PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel were adept at resonating personally with an individual or a small group.

Another strikingly interesting communicator was former CEO of UBER Travis Kalanick. The audience knew his backstory well and as moderator Jason Calacanis led the conversation TK as he is known slowly came out of his head and weaved a wonderful story of where his new company Cloud Kitchens is headed.

What does it mean for you?

Picture yourself on a Saturday morning with some free time on your hands.

You have a project you are working on and you get to pick one of two locations to tinker.

You can either head into your garage or you can get out on the front porch.

Benioff needs the front porch, Sergei needs the garage.

Both lead tens of thousands of people and importantly have complementary teammates who make the opposite choice as you need people in both settings.

Along with knowing your market, your customers, and how these new tools are going to help you serve these constituencies well it really matters to know how your MA is best conveyed so it resonates with your team.

MA is at the end of the word CHARIS-MA

Is your MA a big thump of the bass drum or more like a tuning fork.

Get this right and watch your team take off!

More to learnings from the AIS to come, thanks for reading.
