Leadership and Personality Types: Part 1

Leadership and Personality Types: Part 1

Happy July! I hope you are having an amazing summer! This month will be the first of a four part series on Leadership! Some of you may be saying "I'm not a leader so I'll just stop reading right now". But wait... aren't we all leaders in some capacity? As a profession, you may be a leader. As a parent or an older sibling, you may?be a leader. In a social sector or club participation, you may?be a leader. In your community, you may be a leader.?The insights I'm?going to share over the next four months apply in MANY arenas to keep reading!! For each personality type, I'll be covering three things. First, what are the natural strengths of each personality type as a leader. Secondly, what potential pitfalls should each personality type avoid as a leader. Lastly, how do you effectively lead each personality type! If you like the insights I share over the next four months, keep in mind that I have a Leading With Personality session that I teach,?either in person or by zoom. I'd be honored do this session for your organization! I'd also love it if you think of me when you hear?of other organizations who could benefit from something like this! Let's start with the Dominant "D" Personlity! There are MANY natural strengths for a "D" type as a leader. In fact, it's almost like they were born to BE a leader! Here are some that come to mind: Working well under pressure, multi-tasking, making quick decisions, moving quickly, problem solving, gathering what they need as they go, pivoting when needed, accomplishing tasks, assigning tasks and being self motivated. Wow! Those are definitely some amazing attributes. There are some potential pitfalls, though, for the Dominant "D" type as well. Here's some that fall into this category: Considering the ideas of others, taking time to build relationships, hearing what others are saying, relaxing, dealing with details, being patient and interrupting others What about leading a Dominant "D" personality? ?If you have a Dominant "D" type you are leading, be sure to consider these: put them in charge of something, ask for their thoughts, provide opportunities for growth, give them problems to solve, give them bottom line information, make sure they have more than one project to work on at a time, allow them to work independently and give them public praise & recognition. By incorporating these into your leadership of the "D" type, you'll have a much more positive experience and they will feel understand AND appreciated. If you don't already know this, the number one reason people leave a job or don't want to be involved in whatever you are trying to achieve, is because they don't feel valued and appreciated! This applies to business AND personal situations. By interacting with them the way THEY need you to, you will not only have?happier and more productive people?on your team, but they will work for you with blood, sweat and tears. (Not literally of course). This applies to ALL personality types! It's what I often refer to as creating win/win situations! In other words - both people feel like they won! I hope you enjoyed the first of this four part series! I look forward to talking about the Inspiring "I" types in the August e-newsletter! I hope you found value in this month's article!
