Leadership Paves the Way

Leadership Paves the Way

While the uncertainty that this pandemic has brought is substantial, the country is finally in the initial stages of turning our economy back on. Much of the country is under enormous pressures. As we enter this critical time of turnaround, all leaders need to focus on not allowing their emotions to get the best of them. In times of crisis, leaders and employees invariably find themselves in the midst of a stressful and tense atmosphere.

It will take strong leadership from companies, government, and individuals to set the stage for our economic recovery. Every leader needs to pave the way for the country to recover. Great leaders can provide perspective to all around them, reminding them of the bigger picture. Inspire your employees to believe in the abilities of the entire team.

I'm a big believer in the concept of “believe it, achieve it.” Positivity is the fuel for productivity. When coming out of a crisis, leaders need to role model and coach positive behaviors, helping others stay calm and not get caught up in all the negativity that surrounds them.

The management team as well as individual contributors are looking for guidance and looking to you for cues.  Now more than ever, you need to exhibit positive attitude that’s genuine and authentic while working on a game plan designed to keep your team inspired and productive. This will create an environment that is much more conducive to success and growth.

I am not suggesting that everything needs to be presented as rainbows and unicorns. Managing expectations and the potential impact of any crisis is key. Let the team know that it might be a while for the storm to completely pass, but that you and the organization are prepared for the long and hard battle ahead. Then map out a strategic plan with tangible timelines and milestones that the team can take action on.

As you manage expectations, realize not every strategy or decision will be loved by all. As a leader, you would do best by not taking things personally when some of the team questions your roadmap. Don't let the noise and politics cloud your thinking and perception, altering your decision-making capabilities.

Anyone who knows me knows that I strongly believe that fear never wins, but unfortunately, it is very contagious. It was easy to see with this pandemic that fear traveled much faster than the virus. You cannot afford to project yourself as someone who is not sure of your ability to lead or is short on confidence.

I and the entire Firebrick team believe that it's the tough times that separate the mediocre leaders from the great ones. It's during the moments of crisis that your leadership abilities are put to the test and when your teams need your leadership the most. Now is your time to put confidence back into your people and help your organization not just survive but thrive.
