Leadership For A New Generation

I was reading a post in a Learning and Development chatgroup this morning where I noticed a very interesting comment from someone who is considered an expert in their field. Loosely quoted, the comment went something like this: "This new generation of youngsters who complain about how the older generation works are showing how their generation has a poor attitude toward work."

What struck me about this comment was not just the lack of empathy that came from this comment, nor was it the lack of curiosity toward a whole new generation of talent, but more significantly, it was the lack of understanding from a corporate leader that we, as an older generation, are responsible for forging a whole new animal that many of us are too poorly equipped to fully leverage on.

Compounding the issue of a lack of understanding from our leaders is the known fact that our way of working has shifted dramatically over the past two years due to the COVID Pandemic. As we are shifting into a hybrid culture that mixes technology with human connection to collaborate, communicate, and connect with each other, we are exposing ourselves to new challenges in how we lead and operate.

In our opinion, at Level V Partners, we believe that we are on the verge of a "perfect storm" situation where we are dealing with "The Great Resignation" seeing a tremendous efflux of talent leaving their jobs after the COVID pandemic, combined with a mass influx of Generation Z talent about to descend upon us this year, combined with the corporate world needing to learn how to operate in this new hybrid world. Another contributing factor is the much-needed diversification of future workforces, which will force us to take a hard look at how we lead and run our companies.

The good news is, as a species, we have proven time and time again that our capacity to adapt to change is our single most valuable asset. With this in mind, I am confident that we will overcome any cultural and operational challenges that will come our way in the future.

Over the past twenty years that I have been involved in studying and coaching leadership, I have learned that a team or an entire organization's adaptability rests solely on the effectiveness of its leaders. As a new dawn is rapidly descending upon us, in how we are going to govern our organizations, manage our teams, and inspire hope in our people, I believe that our traditional way of approaching how we lead will come under tremendous scrutiny.

For that reason, I would like to invite you to join me in this critical conversation about leadership in this new era. Join me, and my team at Level V Partners as we use this platform to raise critical issues, ask tough questions and invite honest conversations around what is needed in leadership tomorrow.

Join us in this periodical newsletter to stay up to date on critical issues in the leadership of a new generation and feel free to join in on the conversation so we can all contribute to a more effective way of leading future generations to come.
