The Leadership Mindset: Changing the World from Any Seat

“Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.”
This powerful quote, attributed to Theodore Roosevelt, has guided me throughout my career and leadership, especially during times of frustration. I used to believe that real influence only came from the top, from those making the 'big decisions.' This belief was challenged during my transition from global strategy to country leadership. I found myself overwhelmed by the health system changes I wanted to see and frustrated by what I perceived as the limitations of my role.
That frustration came to a head when a coach pointed out something that shook me: Nelson Mandela led his country toward freedom from a jail cell. Here I was, working at one of the world’s largest biotech firms, with access to an immense network and resources, complaining about my perceived lack of influence. The coach called me out and said, “You don’t truly want to lead change, because if you did, you would already be doing it—with what you have, where you are.”
That conversation changed everything. It was a turning point, a moment of truth where I shifted my mindset from one of limitation to one of possibility. I embraced the idea that leadership isn’t tied to position or authority. Instead, it’s about the commitment to make things better—whether on a small or grand scale, whether from a boardroom or a team meeting.
This week, as we were preparing for Wellness Week at Roche with the theme of resilience, we were offered a set of motivational stickers to choose from. Without thinking, I randomly picked one—and the words on it stopped me in my tracks: “Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.” It was a stark reminder of the lesson I had learned years ago. The message continues to ground me in the reality that no matter where you are or what resources you have, you can always make an impact. Change is always within reach.

The world needs more people who can translate good intentions into action. In fact, that’s the only thing that ever has changed the world. It’s those who commit to leading from where they are, who find a way to make things better, who ultimately make the biggest difference. Leading change isn’t about waiting for the perfect moment; it’s about taking action now, with what you have.

Just know, as an article of faith, your impact is always beyond what is easily seen and measured. You will be the source of others actions and outcomes, and much of their contribution you may never know...beyond the inner certainty that you make a difference in the lives of others.
