Is leadership a matter of theory or practice?

Is leadership a matter of theory or practice?

As individuals in our respective fields, we've likely come across the oft-repeated phrase, "Practice is worth more than theory". I've found this statement dismissive of the importance of theoretical research and innovation. However, as I ponder the requirements of contemporary managerial roles, I can't help but contemplate which skills and knowledge are vital for triumph in today's rapidly evolving business realm.

What do leaders truly need to succeed - knowledge or skills? Is it another fancy degree that makes a difference, or is it the practical application of their management strategies in everyday work?

  1. If the answer is that managers need more theory to apply to their leadership, design visions and goals, elaborate values, motivate people, etc., coaching is not very useful.
  2. Suppose the answer is that managers need to develop their communication skills and relational know-how. In that case, they need to revisit and change how they relate to their employees, customers, partners, and colleagues daily; then, the skills they can acquire through coaching may be entirely appropriate.

Not only that but by 'practising the practice', they could acquire the skills to become coaches themselves. An executive coaching course creates a behavioural learning environment without paper or slides, providing each coachee with an active context to acquire operational and practical skills.

Leadership's not just about absorbing theoretical knowledge - it's about putting that knowledge into practice. Coaching is all about 'doing and practising' to become the best leader you can be true. Don't just read about leadership; experience it firsthand.

Effective executive coaching is not about theory or concepts but about acquiring tangible and practical skills through consistent experimentation. The ultimate goal is for these skills to become second nature and ingrained in the leader's very being—successful coaching results in a lasting change in the leader's daily behaviour within their work environment.

Coaching can unlock incredible potential and bring about life-changing results. It's a powerful tool that can significantly impact individuals and organisations alike.

Aspiring leaders should realise that more than improving their behavioural skills will be necessary for growth. Fundamental transformation requires shedding old habits and adopting a fresh perspective on life.

Have you ever noticed how learning new behaviours and practical skills can change you as a person? It's more than just a surface-level process. It's a gradual transformation that leads to a broader and more expanded self-image. The power of practical repetition is genuinely remarkable.

Becoming a professional pianist is a challenging task. It takes countless hours of practice, dedication, and perseverance to master the craft truly. Similar to sports, consistent practice can transform your personal balance, force distribution, speed, resilience, and concentration. With time and effort, you can develop precise attention to detail, strategic planning, and unwavering willpower.

Thus:

  1. To make progress stick, practice new skills consistently. Put them into a daily routine. Remember, practice makes perfect!
  2. Self-awareness and personal development involve accepting changes in how we see ourselves through life.
  3. Lastly, it changes the way others perceive us.

Nothing to say in leadership, 'practice is worth more than theory'.

Agree. Leadership is more arts than science and requires a lot to try, learn and re-learn. There is no substitute for actual practice than mere theory.

Merci de remettre en question l'idée que la pratique vaut plus que la théorie en matière de leadership.
